Many of us have fond memories of the original Motorola Razr flip phones. During its heyday, it was a must-have fashion accessory and a hugely popular device, selling more than 130 million units across the world.

Over the past few years, Motorola has brought back the Razr brand for their next-generation line-up of clamshell-style flip phones. Making use of the latest flexible displays, these are some of the most stylish smartphones available on the market with the most advanced displays.

Motorola’s latest Razr 40 Ultra smartphone is now available in the UK. Starting from £39.99 per month plus £159 upfront at Carphone Warehouse, it has a large 3.6-inch screen on the outside of the phone. This makes it the largest and most advanced external display on any flip phone to date.

In this article, you can find out more about the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the best deals currently available in the UK.

What is the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra?

Motorola’s Razr 40 Ultra is one of the most exciting foldable smartphones to debut this year, thanks to the unique 3.6-inch display on the outside of the device. It’s a game-changer for the clamshell phone market, giving you a super-sleek design and some of the most advanced displays available today.

External Display

The real stand-out feature of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is the 3.6-inch display that’s on the outside of the phone. It’s a game-changer for the clamshell phone market – everything that’s come before has had a much smaller screen (less than 2-inches in size).

With other clamshell-style phones, you only really get some basic functionality on the outer display. This includes seeing the current date and time, your notifications, the weather forecast, etc. The Razr 40 Ultra does this with aplomb with customisable panels and a wide range of live wallpapers and clock faces that you’re able to choose from.

On top of that, the larger external display on the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra opens up lots of new possibilities. Because it’s so much larger, you can run almost any app you like on the external display. This means, for instance, you can browse the web, send emails, reply to messages, use GPS navigation and watch videos on the outer display. You’ll also get a full on-screen keyboard so you can tap away and reply to messages without needing to open your phone.

The external display uses pOLED technology with 1066×1056 pixels (413ppi), giving you clear and sharp images with high levels of contrast. It also supports an impressively high refresh rate of up to 144Hz, giving you a super-smooth experience.

Internal Display & Hinge

When you flip open the phone, you’ll get a 6.9-inch pOLED display on the inside. This has 2400×1080 pixels (441ppi), giving you a large screen for an immersive viewing experience. The inner screen supports a refresh rate of up to 165Hz along with technologies like LTPO and HDR10+.

With the Razr 40 Ultra, Motorola has introduced a new ‘teardrop hinge’ with dual-axis tracking to make the device even slimmer. The Razr 40 Ultra is just 7.0mm thick when open and 15.1mm thick when closed. Combined with the Ultra Thin Glass, this makes the inner display near-seamless when open. You also get IP52 dust and water resistance as part of the package.

The hinge supports Motorola’s Flex View technology. This means you don’t have to fully open your phone every time. Instead, you can open it part way to use at multiple different angles. For instance, you can use it on a desk like a laptop, or you can place it upside down like a tripod when you take photos.

Camera

You’ll find two rear-facing cameras on the Razr 40 Ultra. The main camera uses a 12-megapixel sensor with Dual Pixel PDAF and optical image stabilisation (OIS) for clearer and sharper photos. There’s also a 13-megapixel sensor that’s used for taking ultra-wide and macro shots.

Because of the folding design, it’s also possible to use the Razr 40 Ultra to take a rear camera selfie. With this, the external display functions as a viewfinder so you’re able to see yourself when you take a photo on the rear camera.

Alongside the two rear-facing cameras, there’s also a 32-megapixel camera on the inside of the device. This can also be used for selfies and for video calling on the device.

Performance

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with 8GB of RAM. Alongside that, you’ll get 256GB of built-in storage for your files.

You’ll find a 3,800mAh battery that Motorola says should give you ‘all day battery life’. When you need to charge up your phone, there’s the option of fast wired charging (up to 30W) and Qi-compatible wireless charging (up to 5W).

The handset is powered by the latest version of Google’s Android 13 operating system and also supports the latest 5G mobile networks here in the UK.
