Lyca Mobile Unlimited Data Plans

In the UK, Lyca Mobile is a low-cost mobile network offering flexible Pay As You Go plans with 4G & 5G coverage from EE.

As a special offer for April 2024, they’ve discounted their unlimited data SIM card to just £9.99 per month for the first 6 months. This offer is only available to new Lyca Mobile customers. There’s also no contract and no credit check so you can cancel the plan at any time.

If you keep your Lyca Mobile unlimited data plan after the first 6 months, the price will go up to £25 per month. Assuming you’re keep the plan for 12 months, the average monthly cost for comparison is £17.50 per month.

Alongside the unlimited UK minutes, texts and mobile data, you’ll get an allowance of 100 international minutes on your ‘UK Plan Unlimited’ deal. This allows you to call mobiles and landlines in 38 international destinations. If you need to call abroad more often than that, you can upgrade to the UK Plan Unlimited Plus deal which gives you unlimited international minutes.

Lyca Mobile’s unlimited data plans are available on a choice of either a physical SIM card or eSIM. If you have an eSIM-ready phone, you can choose the “eSIM” option at checkout to avoid waiting for a plastic SIM card to arrive in the post. You can also use it to enable dual-SIM functionality on many phones, allowing you to have two phone numbers on your device at the same time.

Fair Use Policy

There’s a fair use limit of 650GB data per month on Lyca Mobile’s unlimited data plan. According to Lyca Mobile, they “may investigate your usage” if it exceeds the 650GB per month threshold. They could then choose to reduce your speeds or to suspend your service, at their discretion:

“If we reasonably believe that your usage is harming our Network or other members’ access or use of our Network then you will breach this Fair Usage Policy. Using unreasonably large amounts of data, including but not limited using around 650GB of data within a period. If we suspect you are in breach of this Fair Usage Policy, we may investigate your usage further to ascertain
whether your unlimited data usage is in line with this Fair Usage Policy and take action by reduced speed or suspending services.”

In addition, Lyca Mobile’s published terms and conditions say the SIM card cannot be used in devices other than mobile handsets. The use of tethering & personal hotspot is also prohibited by their terms:

“Lyca Mobile reserves the right to withdraw or suspend the offer or to disconnect you if we suspect that offer is being used for commercial purposes, for conferencing, or if it is not being used in a handset (in a SIM box for example), if it is being used for tethering or if any reason Lyca Mobile reasonably suspects that you are not acting in accordance with this policy where we consider that the usage was illegitimate”

Almost every other mobile network has removed these limitations following an Ofcom ruling on net neutrality in 2018.

If you’re travelling outside the UK, there’s a 12GB per month fair use limit for data in the EU.

Download Speeds

You’ll have access to EE’s 4G & 5G mobile networks when you’re using a Lyca Mobile SIM card inside your phone. You should therefore expect fairly similar download speeds to customers on the EE network.

According to the latest Opensignal report, EE customers saw an average download speed of 47.7Mbps (December 2022 – February 2023).

In general, EE’s network tends to give faster speeds than other UK networks. However, this can vary quite substantially depending on where you’re located so it’s worth testing out multiple different providers.

Comparison to Alternatives

In our opinion, Lyca Mobile’s unlimited data plan compare favourably to the deals currently available on other mobile networks.

During the 6-month introductory period where you’re only paying £9.99 per month, Lyca Mobile’s unlimited data plan is currently the cheapest in the market by far. However, there are cheaper options available elsewhere when the plan reverts to the full monthly price of £25 after the first six months.

If you’re looking for alternative providers, you can consider Lebara Mobile’s unlimited data plan. As a special offer for April 2024, you’ll pay £12.50 per month for 3 months on Lebara (£25 per month thereafter) when you use the KEN3 voucher code at checkout. This comes with 4G & 5G coverage on the Vodafone network. Alternatively, SMARTY’s unlimited data plan is available for £16 per month with access to 4G & 5G coverage from Three.

Coverage

4G & 5G Coverage From EE

In the UK, you’ll have access to 4G & 5G coverage from EE when you’re using a Lyca Mobile SIM card inside your phone. This means you’ll get 99% population coverage on 4G, along with 5G coverage in more than 1,000 UK towns and cities.

Before you order a Lyca Mobile SIM card, you can double-check the coverage in your area by entering your postcode on the Lyca Mobile website:

Unfortunately, Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling are not currently available to Lycamobile customers.

International Roaming

If you’re travelling abroad to an EU country, you’ll be able to use your Lyca Mobile SIM card at no extra cost. This includes the minutes, texts and data from your plan (up to 12GB per month on UK Plan Unlimited).

In addition to the free EU roaming that’s available on all Lyca Mobile plans, Lyca Mobile also offers a range of AloTurka plans with inclusive roaming in Turkey. However, this isn’t compatible with the unlimited data offer (the largest AloTurka plan comes with just 35GB data per month).

If you’re travelling abroad to any other country, you’ll need to pay Lyca Mobile’s standard international roaming rates instead.

Keeping Your Phone Number

If you’re switching from another UK mobile network to Lyca Mobile, it’s a straightforward process keeping your current phone number.

Start by ordering your new unlimited data plan from the Lyca Mobile website. Once you’ve done that, you can request a PAC Code from your old network. This is available through your mobile network’s website or app, or by texting PAC to 65075.

Once you’ve activated your new Lyca Mobile SIM, you’ll be able to submit your PAC Code through this page on the Lyca Mobile website. Your phone number will then be moved over within 2 working days.
