Fair Use Policy

According to the Lebara Mobile website, they don’t have any hidden caps for unlimited data in the UK. The only exceptions are made for fraudulent usage and their general terms and conditions:

Where Unlimited data is included in a plan allowance, there is no data cap, subject to fraud exceptions. All general T&C will apply.

The general terms and conditions for the Lebara Mobile service say, amongst other things, that the SIM card is for your “personal use” only.

If you’re using your Lebara Mobile SIM card abroad, there’s a 30GB monthly fair use limit in Europe and a 10GB monthly fair use limit in India. As long as you stay within these limits, you’ll be able to use your mobile phone at no extra cost.

Download Speeds

On Lebara Mobile’s unlimited data plan, you’ll get access to 4G & 5G speeds on the Vodafone network.

According to the Lebara Mobile website, the average download speed is “over 20Mbps” for customers using 4G on their service. This broadly aligns with the average download speed of 23-35Mbps on 4G that Vodafone advertises to their own customers.

Customers with a 5G-ready phone and with 5G coverage in their area should be able to access even faster speeds with Lebara Mobile’s 5G service. According to Vodafone, you’ll normally be able to get download speeds of 150-200Mbps when you’re connected to 5G.

Comparison to Alternatives

On Lebara Mobile, you’ll get unlimited data with 5G coverage from the Vodafone network. In the following section, we’ll look at your alternative options.

In general, Lebara Mobile has the best introductory deals with unlimited data from just £11.25 per month for the first 3 months. After the first 3 months, ASDA Mobile can work out a little bit cheaper as long as you’re happy with their download speed restrictions.

Coverage

2G, 3G & 4G Coverage

Lebara Mobile uses Vodafone as their UK network coverage provider. This means you’ll get 99% population coverage on Vodafone’s 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

Before you sign up to join Lebara Mobile, it’s worth double-checking the coverage in your area. You can do this by entering your postcode on Vodafone’s online coverage map:

Check Lebara Coverage (via vodafone.co.uk) →

If you’re using a compatible device, it’s also possible to use Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling on Lycamobile.

For more information, see our guide to the coverage on Lebara Mobile.

5G Coverage

If you’re using a 5G-ready phone, you’ll also be able to use 5G in more than 100 UK towns & cities. This gives you access to faster download speeds, more network capacity and lower amounts of latency.

Lebara Mobile’s 5G service has been available since August 2021. There’s no extra cost for using 5G on Lebara but you’ll need to make sure you have a 5G-ready device.

Tethering & Personal Hotspot

Tethering or personal hotspot refers to the process of sharing your smartphone’s internet connection with another device (e.g. with your laptop or tablet). It’s often used as a convenient way to get access to mobile broadband without needing to carry around a separate device and plan.

On Lebara Mobile’s unlimited data plan, you can use tethering and personal hotspot to share your unlimited data allowance with other devices.

International Roaming

You can use your Lebara Mobile SIM card through international roaming when you travel abroad to another country.

If you’re travelling to an EU or EEA country, you can use up to 30GB of data abroad at no extra cost each month. Across the UK networks, this is one of the most generous fair usage limits for European roaming.

If you’re travelling abroad to India, you can use up to 10GB of data each month at no extra cost.

If you’re travelling to any other country, you’ll need to pay Lebara Mobile’s standard international roaming rates.

Keeping Your Phone Number

If you’re joining Lebara Mobile from another UK mobile network, it’s a straightforward process to keep your current phone number.

Start by ordering your new unlimited data plan from the Lebara Mobile website. Once you’ve done that, you can request a PAC Code from your old network. You can get one through their website or app, or by texting PAC to 65075.

When your new unlimited data SIM card arrives in the post, submit your PAC Code to Lebara through this online form. They will then schedule the transfer of your phone number (normally for the next working day).

For a step-by-step guide on how to transfer your phone number to Lebara Mobile, please select your current mobile network from the dropdown menu below:

  • According to Lebara’s terms and conditions document, 4G speed ranges from 3.8 Mbps to 60.0 Mbps in Download and 900 Kbps to 23.2 Mbps in upload.

Google for “The speed of internet access services on our Network depends on various factors such as”+”lebara”.

In East London I got 10Mbit down and 6Mbit up, with a 12% packet loss.

Regarding the Lebara unlimited data plan. It may be useful for potential users to know that Lebara does not support using its data in a 4G router. I use another network but was tempted to try Lebara because its data plan was unlimited and they boast there is no restriction. However, if you put the SIM in the 4G router the data flow is immediately obstructed. It does work in a phone handset. Repeated requests and conversations with Lebara customer services simply results in the statement that Lebara does not support use of its SIMs in a router.
I suppose the question hinges on the interpretation of ‘personal use’. In practice the networks interpret personal as a single phone handset.
To explain the context. I abandoned landline services five years ago. Having tested serveral mobile providers only one, so far, is truly unrestricted. The network that one uses is being degraded so I would like to find and alternative.

      Strange.
I got a Lebara sim just this week from Poundland and topped it up with 5Gb of data, just to see if it worked, because I still have NO 5g reception with Three at my home address (despite Three’s coverage checker showing that their 5g coverage has recently expanded to include my address and surrounding area!)
The Lebara sim gives decent 5g on my phone (hooray) so I moved on to trying it in my 4g router. It seems to work fine.
I haven’t done extensive tests because I only put a small amount of data on it. But it has had multiple devices connected at the same time (Google home minis, 2 phones, FireTV cube), and speed tests on the phones and Fire TV showed speeds around 30Mbs down, 20 up. But I am now deliberating on getting a 5G sim router to take advantage of the improved speed.
I can get around 100Mbs with the Lebara sim in my phone, but when I use it as a hotspot the speed drops to around 35-40. I don’t know if this is a limitation of my phone (Samsung S20 FE 5G) or down to Lebara throttling the connection.
Either way, I might just take the plunge and take the 30 day rolling contract option until Three get their act together. 🤔

I am interested in purchasing Lebara Sim Card on your website for £11.25 for the first three months and the £22.50 after that, I would use this sim for my last phone. I have been told by Lebara it’s not possible as this is not a Lebara deal, secondly as I already have an account with them for my personal new phone. Purchasing your above mentioned deal I could loose my money. My old phone is open to all networks. Please advise, your deal is good value I can’t understand what is the complication.

    • Hi Surinder,
Thanks for your comment. This is an official Lebara Mobile deal and you’ll transact on their official website, though you will need to be a new customer to get it. If you’re looking to sign up as a new customer (e.g. for a new SIM card), I’d recommend logging out of your account or using “incognito mode” to sign up. That should give you access to the £11.25/month new customer offer.
      Hope this helps!
      Ken
