BT offers 12-month student broadband deals, with a Stay Fast speed guarantee and download speeds of up to 900Mbps.

If you’re a student, it’s never been more important to have fast and reliable home broadband. This is so you can study, stream, game, and stay in touch with your friends whilst at uni.

BT is currently offering a range of exclusive student broadband deals, which are available on a shorter 12-month contract to tie in with the academic year. You can get BT’s superfast plans from just £28.99 per month if you’re a student, with a Stay Fast speed guarantee and an inclusive Smart Hub router. You can also add the Complete WiFi add-on for guaranteed wifi in every room of your home, so everyone will be able to stream, game and download, whichever room they’re in.

In this article, we’ll look at BT’s latest student broadband deals, including how you’re able to get them and what’s included in the price. We’ll also look at the key features available on BT’s student broadband service and how you can switch your home broadband provider to BT.

BT Student Broadband Deals

In the UK, fibre broadband normally comes on an 18-month or 24-month contract. Normally, this isn’t ideal if you’re a student at university as you might move home at the end of the academic year.

For a more flexible student broadband service with superfast download speeds and unlimited usage, could consider getting one of BT’s student broadband plans. They’re available on a shorter 12-month contract to fit in with the academic year, giving you the flexibility to move after a year if you need to. BT’s student broadband plans are available from £28.99 per month and require you to sign up with a university email address.

The following table shows BT’s latest 12-month student broadband deals:

Service Average Speed Contract Length Upfront Price Monthly Price
BT
Fibre Essential
36Mbps download 12 month contract £29.99 £28.99/month
BT
Fibre 1
50Mbps download 12 month contract £29.99 £29.99/month
BT
Fibre 2
67Mbps download 12 month contract £29.99 £33.99/month

If you’re a student living at an address with access to full fibre (FTTP) broadband, you’ll also be able to get BT’s full fibre broadband service on a 12-month contract.

With full fibre, you can get ultrafast download speeds of up to 900Mbps, allowing you to get even more devices online at the same time in your student household. You will, however, need to get your landlord’s permission to install full fibre in your home, if it isn’t already connected to the full fibre network.

The following table shows BT’s full fibre broadband deals for students:

Service Average Speed Contract Length Upfront Price Monthly Price
BT
Full Fibre 100
150Mbps download 12 month contract £29.99 £35.99/month
BT
Full Fibre 500
500Mbps download 12 month contract £29.99 £45.99/month
BT
Full Fibre 900
900Mbps download 12 month contract £29.99 £55.99/month

For most student households, we’d typically recommend choosing either Fibre 2 broadband (67Mbps) or Full Fibre 100 (150Mbps). Simply put, a faster download speed will allow you to use more devices at the same time on your connection. You’ll typically need about 5Mbps to stream HD video on each individual device, and about 25Mbps to stream Ultra HD video on each device. Be sure to choose a plan that’s fast enough for all of your usage, to avoid any slowdowns or arguments over who’s online.

All of BT’s student broadband plans come with a Smart Hub router, along with unlimited usage and no need for a landline.

BT Student Broadband Features

12 Month Contract

With most other fibre broadband services, you’ll need to sign up on either an 18-month or a 24-month contract. This isn’t ideal if you’re a student, in case you need to move home after one year. If you need to cancel your broadband service during the minimum contracted term, you’ll incur early exit fees for this (which are normally equivalent to paying off the remainder of your contract, less a small discount).

On BT’s 12-month student broadband plans, you’ll have the flexibility to end your service after one year without incurring early termination fees. This can be incredibly useful if you need to move home at the end of the academic year. If you’re staying put, it’s as simple as renewing your service for another year. Alternatively, you can stay on a one-month rolling plan if you prefer (though an additional fee will apply if you do this).

Simple Budgeting

On BT’s student broadband service, there’s just one monthly fee and one simple bill for your fibre broadband service. There’s no need to take any additional services such as a landline or TV service that not everyone will be using.

Because your broadband service comes with unlimited usage, and because there’s no landline service, there won’t be any surprise additional charges on your bill at the end of the month. That means it’s really easy to figure out how much everyone owes – you can simply divide the monthly fee by the number of people in your household. There’s no need to open up your bill each month, to work out who has made which phone call, how much it cost, etc.

Stay Fast Speed Guarantee

You’ll benefit from the Stay Fast speed guarantee on all of BT’s student broadband plans. This is the minimum guaranteed download speed for your service, and it applies for the entire duration of your plan.

If, at any point, the speed of the connection to your hub drops below the guaranteed minimum, you’ll get expert support from BT to get your broadband speeds back to normal. If the speeds still aren’t back to normal after 30 days, you’ll be able to claim £20 compensation from BT. You’ll also have the right to exit your contract early without penalty.

Complete WiFi

If you’re living in a larger student household, you can add the Complete Wi-Fi service for a guaranteed Wi-Fi signal in every room of your house. This means you can stream, study, game, and download from any room in your home – even if you’re a long way away from the Hub.

The Complete Wi-Fi service makes use of BT’s latest Smart Hub 2 router, along with clever Wi-Fi boosting Discs to seamlessly extend the range of your Wi-Fi. This should improve the Wi-Fi speeds throughout your home, whilst also removing Wi-Fi blankspots and rooms where you’re unable to get Wi-Fi.

The Complete Wi-Fi service is backed by BT’s Complete Wi-Fi Guarantee, which gives you £100 back if you’re unable to get a download speed of at least 10Mbps in every room of your home.

Hybrid Connect

If you’re looking for ‘unbreakable’ wi-fi in your student household, you can add BT’s Hybrid Connect add-on. For an extra £7 per month, this will give you a 4G-based broadband connection, to be used as backup if there’s ever a fault with your fibre broadband service.

The Hybrid Connect is powered by EE’s 4G network and comes with unlimited usage included. What’s handy is that it’ll kick in automatically if there’s a fault detected with your fibre broadband service. You’ll switch over to the 4G connection automatically and transparently. There’s no need to tether from your phones, or to switch to different wi-fi networks – all of your devices will stay online without you needing to do a thing.

In our opinion, the Hybrid Connect service can be really beneficial if you have lots of connected devices in your student home (such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, games consoles, smart TVs, and more). It’s also really beneficial for smart home devices such as doorbells, lights, and security devices. All of these devices will just continue to work, without you needing to lift a finger.

Switching to BT

If you’re currently using another broadband provider in your student home, it’s easy switching your service to BT.

Start by ordering your new BT student broadband service. You’ll need to place your order online using your university email address to take advantage of their latest student broadband deals.

Once you’ve done that, it will normally take about two weeks to get your service set-up (you can request a later date if you prefer, depending on when you’re moving). In the mean time, BT will contact your old broadband provider for you to cancel the old service. The main exception to this is if you’re a Virgin Media customer, in which case you’ll need to contact them directly to cancel.
