The introduction of 5G mobile networks is rapidly gaining pace, with more than 50 UK towns and cities already having a confirmed launch date for 5G.

In this article, we’ll help you to keep track of when 5G coverage will be available in your area and which 5G mobile networks you’re able to use. We’re monitoring the the latest 5G announcements from EE, O2, Three and Vodafone in order to keep this guide up-to-date for your town or city.

If you’re living in a 5G coverage area and would like a 5G-ready price plan, see our guide to 5G SIM-only deals. At the time of writing, you can get a 5G price plan from £15/month. This will also work on 3G & 4G networks until 5G coverage finally launches in your area.

Overview: 5G Coverage By Network

  • EE
  • O2
  • Three
  • Vodafone

In the UK, there are four network coverage providers: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Each of them is currently going through the process of launching a 5G mobile service which will deliver greater network capacity, lower latency and faster download speeds.

The following table gives a summary of the key announcements so far as to which towns and cities you’ll be able to use 5G coverage in:

Vodafone is currently in the lead with the most towns and cities enabled for 5G coverage. However, this is likely to change over the next few months as Three is planning to launch 5G coverage in 25 towns and cities before the end of 2019.

BT Mobile offers 5G coverage using EE’s network to customers who have a BT Plus plan and a 5G-ready smartphone. Sky Mobile have also confirmed that they’ll be launching a 5G service in 2019. Sky uses O2 as their network coverage provider so you can expect them to offer 5G in the same towns and cities as O2.

5G Coverage In Major Towns & Cities

Unsurprising, it’s the UK’s largest towns and cities that are getting 5G coverage before the rest of the country.

All 15 of the UK’s largest towns and cities will have a 5G signal before the end of the year. However, due to the staggered roll-out of 5G, different 5G mobile networks will be available in each city. This is summarised in the table below:

Read on to find out more about the 5G roll out in different regions of the UK.

5G Coverage: By Region

Eastern England

At the moment, 5G coverage isn’t available in the East of England. Norwich will be the first city to get 5G in this region, with O2 currently planning to have their service live before the end of 2019.

5G coverage will then launch in Cambridge, Norwich and Peterborough during 2020:

London

Unsurprisingly, London is the epicentre of the UK’s 5G coverage roll out.

All four mobile networks offer 5G coverage in London. However, coverage across the city can still be patchy in some places so it’s worth double-checking it for the areas where you live and work. You can do this on the EE, O2, Three and Vodafone websites.

  • Wow 5g is terrible in Manchester my device is being returned on Monday looks like it will be another year till it’s up and running properly

  • Hi there,

Can you add Walsall to the list since EE is already live in walsall and Three has confirmed that Walsall will have 5G at the same time they Launch 5G in Birmigham and Wolverhampton (End of December)

  • Hi Ken – If you look at some of the coverage maps (EE in London) it looks like almost the entire Zone 2 London is covered with some small gaps. Do you think this coverage is actually real? I haven’t read any updated articles on actually using a 5G phone since the launch back in May. Thoughts?

    • Hi Brian,
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I haven’t actually tested this out for myself on EE in Zone 2, so it’s difficult for me to comment on the completeness of coverage. My understanding, however, is that EE does have more comprehensive 5G coverage than other networks in the cities they currently serve.
      Ken
