Alongside them, eight other mobile networks are also offering a 5G service, making use of 5G coverage from one of the four big providers.

The following table shows a list of 5G mobile networks and the coverage you’ll get on each one:

There are multiple benefits of 5G technology including more network capacity, lower amounts of latency and faster download speeds. It should give you a more reliable mobile service along with one that’s faster to respond.

As well as choosing a network with 5G coverage, you’ll also need to choose a 5G-ready plan. For more information, see our guide to 5G SIM-only deals.

London

Unsurprisingly, London has been the epicentre of the UK’s 5G coverage roll out.

All four network coverage providers have a 5G mobile service available in London. However, coverage across the city can still be patchy in some places. For this reason, it’s worth double-checking the coverage for your postcode on the 5G maps from EE, O2, Three and Vodafone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mobile networks offer 5G coverage in the UK?
In the UK, 5G coverage is currently available on the following mobile networks:
Where can I find a 5G coverage map for the UK?
You can see a 5G coverage map for each mobile network by following the relevant link and entering your postcode:
In which towns and cities is 5G coverage available?
5G coverage is currently available in more than 300 UK towns and cities including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield and others. See the table here for a list of 5G locations that are live on each network.
What are the benefits of 5G coverage?
5G coverage offers greater network capacity so download speeds are much less likely to slow down in busy or congested areas. It also offers lower latency (~10ms) and faster download speeds that are five to ten times faster than 4G (around 150-200Mbps on today’s 5G networks).
How much does it cost to get a 5G price plan?
At present, it’s possible to get a 5G SIM-only deal from as little as £2.90/month. Unlimited data is also available on a range of 5G plans, currently starting from £15/month.

More Information

If you’d like to get started on a 5G price plan, see our guide to 5G SIM Only deals. Alternatively, you can visit your mobile network’s website for more information about their 5G plans (e.g. see the EE, O2, Three and Vodafone websites).

  • EE 150 towns and cities new 5g network location and +160 and +150=310 towns and cities and vodafone 12 more towns and cities and +100+12=112 towns and cities please update this page thank you

  • Has the Three 5g Rollout been halted? I live in inner city Birmingham and according to the Three coverage checker, we have been 2 streets awy for the past 16 months!

    • Hi there,
No, Three are still continuing with their 5G rollout. It’s possible they haven’t yet launched 5G on the mast that serves your area (sometimes this will be due to planning, access requirements, etc). Alternatively, their coverage map is sometimes a little bit outdated so you might be able to get 5G even where the coverage map says you can’t.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

    Hi Ken,
Today EE has confirmed another 35 places including Biggelswade, the small village next to Bedford as well as Milton Keynes the nearest city 30 mins away. I hope this mean Bedford is coming next as that’s just to much teasing for one day

    • Hi Rhys,
Thanks for letting me know! It’s great news that you were able to find 5G in Bedford – that means we’re likely to see it being announced as an official location for 5G very soon! 🙂
      Ken

    • Hi Rhys,
Thanks for your comment. You’re absolutely right: they’re now at 125 UK towns and cities. The list on this page should now be updated, though please let me know if you spot any omissions!

    Hi Ken,
They have 5G on EE in Bedford, but I’ve been to the are with my iPhone 12 Pro and wasn’t able to find it myself. Just to let you know,

    Thanks

    • Hi Simon,
Thanks a lot for the heads up about this and for taking the time to let me know! This should now be resolved and EE’s 5G coverage is showing for Ashford Surrey instead.
      Thanks again,
      Ken

    • Hi Rhys,
Thanks for letting me know about this! As of today, O2 have just announced the launch of 5G in the following locations:

Aughton, Aylesbury, Beaconsfield, Bedford, Bury St Edmunds, Byfleet, Cambridge, Chadwell St Mary, Chelmsford, Colchester, Doncaster, Durham, Epsom, Eton, Gatton Bottom, Gravesend, Great Yarmouth, Halifax, Harlington, Harlow, Hextable, High Wycombe, Hove, How Wood, Ipswich, Longford, Loughborough, Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Rugby, Shepperton Green, Southend-On-Sea, Stevenage, Stockton, Windsor, Whickham, Whitley Bay

I’m currently working on pulling in the latest coverage information so it should have these new locations in the next few hours 🙂
      Thanks,
      Ken

    • Hi Ebony,
Sadly, 5G isn’t available in Braintree at the moment. However, you can still buy a 5G phone & plan and that’ll give you access to 5G as soon as it launches in your area.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

  • Hi Ken,

EE’s coverage checker indicates that 5G is available in Halifax and Sowerby Bridge yet I can’t find anything else published on the web to confirm that it’s live in these two areas.

I do own an EE 5g router and live just within the boundary of the supposed Sowerby Bridge coverage area but I ‘only’ receive 4G+ (which is still pretty rapid).

Is it normal for service providers such as EE to advertise 5g coverage in a given area before the service is actually switched on?

    Many thanks

    • Hi Darren,
Thanks for your comment. Sometimes, the networks will “soft launch” 5G in a given area before they announce it to the public. For instance, it might just be a couple of 5G-enabled masts but not enough for them to claim that coverage is available as you can only use it in a very limited area. This is normally the reason you see 5G coverage appearing in the maps before it gets announced to the public. It’s likely you’ll see an announcement soon if the map shows coverage is available 🙂

    Hi Ken
Thanks for this. Any idea if Giffgaff (which uses O2 networks) are planning to make use of 5g at all, in the foreseeable future? Cheers.

    • Hi Neville,
Thanks for your comment. Sadly, no news about 5G in Newscastle-upon-Lyme at the moment. Keep an eye on this page for updates, however.
      Ken

    • Hi Andrea,
Sadly, no news on these locations just yet. However, both O2 and Vodafone say they’ll be launching 5G in Bournemouth later this year. It’s possible they might extend that to cover Poole as well.
      Ken

    • Hi Stewart,
Thanks for your comment. Do you know which mobile network has placed 5G masts in Aylesbury? I’ve not heard anything official about this location just yet, but the fact that a couple of masts are going up is a good sign that we’ll hopefully see something in the next few months!

Sadly, I haven’t heard anything yet about Vodafone 5G in Sheffield, though do watch this space in case things change soon! I believe the other major networks like EE, O2 and Three do have some 5G coverage in Sheffield, so it might be worth having a look at them as well to see if they’re available where you live.

  • Vodafone offering Gigafast Fibre home broadband 100 – 500 mbps speed in Milton Keynes, please advise, should we take that or wait for 5G home broadband until summer 2020. Thanks

  • Hi Ken,
any news on Bedford? When I went to the 5g en-suite and down the checker it said Q1 2020 for three and summer 2020 for o2 in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas.

    • Hi Rhys,
Sadly, I’m not aware of 5G coverage being announced for Bedford, though it has been announced for Luton in Bedfordshire (currently scheduled for summer 2020 on O2). Like you said, it has also been announced for Milton Keynes.

Only a few select parts of Plymouth are covered by Vodafone 5G – and not the City Centre at all. Was planned to be properly live in September – but still not live despite them selling me a 5G router in July and telling me it was live. Very frustrating!

  • I live in zone one London, Edgware Road to be precise which is close walking distance to Baker Street and Oxford Street and still no 5G. Why I even struggle to get just 4G. So, do not tell me that London is covered because it is not, only a very small percentage is under ‘Testing’, which is a far cry from Lond 5G active.

Unless you can guarantee a great connection that will remain solid especially after the 14 day cancelation period (you would be surprised how many connections drop after this period.) stay away from 5G until they have it configured 100% otherwise you may find yourselves tide into crapola contracts for long periods where watching buildings rise and fall will be a lot quicker than your connection speeds.

  • Wow 5g is terrible in Manchester my device is being returned on Monday looks like it will be another year till it’s up and running properly

  • Hi there,

Can you add Walsall to the list since EE is already live in walsall and Three has confirmed that Walsall will have 5G at the same time they Launch 5G in Birmigham and Wolverhampton (End of December)

  • Hi Ken – If you look at some of the coverage maps (EE in London) it looks like almost the entire Zone 2 London is covered with some small gaps. Do you think this coverage is actually real? I haven’t read any updated articles on actually using a 5G phone since the launch back in May. Thoughts?

    • Hi Brian,
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I haven’t actually tested this out for myself on EE in Zone 2, so it’s difficult for me to comment on the completeness of coverage. My understanding, however, is that EE does have more comprehensive 5G coverage than other networks in the cities they currently serve.
      Ken

    • Hi Buggerlugs,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, the new frequency is being used to deploy 5G-NR technology, which is spectrally much more efficient than 4G-LTE. Therefore, the total amount of bandwidth should dramatically increase on the networks (which will also benefit 4G users, as some usage migrates over to 5G). Eventually, I imagine we’ll see some 4G spectrum being “upgraded” or “converted” to 5G, which will give a further increase in capacity as well – albeit, I imagine it’ll probably be about half a decade before that starts to happen.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

    • Hi Terry,
Sadly, I don’t think Three have announced 5G coverage for Newcastle just yet. I imagine it’ll probably come sometime next year (so far, they’ve only confirmed their 2019 launch plans).
      Ken

      • Thanks for the info Ken my contract ends in January and was hoping it was going be done too but I guess 3 will have to step up if they want to keep there clients happy

  • Hi Ken its looking like January for ee 5g in Oldham ee said the rollout is well in front of schedule across the whole of the UK but have no dates set in stone as it’s bt openreach installing it

    • Hi Jozef,
I believe Three should have 5G in Bradford before the end of the year. O2 have also said that they’ll be launching 5G in Bradford sometime during summer 2020.
      Ken

    • Hi Ian,
Sadly, I haven’t heard anything about Oldham yet. The good news is it’s now available in Manchester, so hopefully it’ll spread out from there and launch in Oldham soon as well.

  • Will I have 5G available in BS6 very soon, as I noticed some Bristol postcodes already have it according to the coverage checker map ?

    • Hi Wendy,
I believe Vodafone have started rolling out 5G coverage in Bristol. I don’t have any more information about the exact postcodes that are covered, so I’d probably just keep a close eye on their coverage map – fingers crossed this will be available in your area very soon1

Hi i have been reading about 5g and how harmful it is!!!!! There is a lot of science to prove the theory of how bad 5g is to all living things. Do you agree ? Please just do not say its safe i need prove it is and explain why other scientist and tecs say its harmful. I have seen many videos and articles about how harmful 5g is…would love for Ken to comment since he is a graduate from Imperial college and would know . Hopefully he gets back to us. As i am a concern parent for my boys.

    • Hi Veronique,
There’s a lot of misinformation out there on potential health risks of 5G, and I definitely don’t think there’s anything you need to worry about here 🙂 Firstly, 5G is just a new technical standard that your mobile phone can use to communicate with the networks. Like other types of networks, it’s a radio-based technology (just like Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G, 4G, FM radio, TV, Bluetooth, etc). Currently, 5G mobile networks use radio waves around 3.4-3.6GHz. This sits in the middle of two frequencies that have been used for Wi-Fi for many years (2.4GHz and 5GHz). It’s non-ionising radiation with low energy (and certainly far too little to interfere with cells).

    • Hi Charlie,
I haven’t heard anything about these areas just yet. Fingers crossed, and we’ll keep this page updated as soon as there’s an announcement 🙂

  • Can you add Walsall onto the List… Three has already confirmed it’s planning to bring 5G to walsall. Three is planning 5G in walsall at the end of 2019

    • Hi Emma,
We’ll add Walsall to this list as soon as a launch date for 5G has been confirmed! I don’t believe Walsall is currently on the list of towns & cities with a confirmed launched date for 5G on Three (though do let me know if I’m mistaken and if they’ve announced it somewhere else).
      Thanks,

Thanks for your comment. The best way to check this is by using the relevant coverage checker for your network. Just tap on the relevant “check coverage” link for your mobile network here. You’ll be able to enter your postcode, to see if 5G coverage is available where you live.

My home near Bognor Regis is to be a safe haven as I am told the local council has no plans for using 5G for street lights. However my same question regarding 5G towers etc has not yet been answered, maybe ignored? plenty of towers appearing!!
I belong to the Bognor ‘Stop 5g group’ and have today written to my doctors surgery to ensure they are aware of the dangers of 5G.
Thank you for the great work, please continue for the sake of everyone.
