Comparison to Alternatives
In our opinion, most households are probably unlikely to need the full 900Mbps speeds available on Sky’s Gigafast Broadband. In fact, Sky is upfront about this, saying it’s “future proof broadband for the busiest homes”.
To give an example, a ultra-HD video stream (in 4K quality) requires 25Mbps of bandwidth. On Ultrafast Broadband, you’re already able to stream ultra-HD video on six devices at the same time. This increases to 36 devices at the same time on Gigafast Broadband, which is evidently more than the average home requires.
With Gigafast Broadband, there are some advantages if you’re downloading large files. For instance, a new PC/console game might download in only 7 minutes. This compares to 3 hours on standard fibre broadband and 40 minutes on Ultrafast Broadband.
Other Sky Broadband Plans
If you don’t need the full 900Mbps speed available on the Gigafast broadband, Sky also offers a range of cheaper fibre broadband plans from only £26 per month. These plans can also be delivered using full fibre (FTTP) technology if it’s available at your address.
For instance, Ultrafast Broadband (with an average download speed of 145Mbps) is available from only £26 per month:
Service | Download Speed | Monthly Cost (may rise during contract) |
|
---|---|---|---|
Sky Superfast | 61Mbps average download | £26.00 per month plus £5.00 upfront 24 month contract | See deal |
Sky Full Fibre 75 | 75Mbps average download | £26.00 per month plus £5.00 upfront 24 month contract | See deal |

Gigabit Broadband Plans
If you’re definitely in the market for gigabit broadband, it’s also worth considering the following alternatives from £34.99 per month:

Full Fibre 900 | 910Mbps average download | £47.99 per month plus £31.99 upfront £50 reward card 24 month contract Monthly cost will rise each April by £3 | See deal |
Full Fibre 900 | 944Mbps average download | £49.00 per month No upfront fee 18 month contract Monthly cost will rise each April by £3 | See deal |
In general, you’ll normally be able to find cheaper plans elsewhere. However, Sky Broadband customers will get a discounted rate when they take Sky TV (e.g. it’s £54 per month for Gigafast Broadband and Sky Entertainment & Netflix). If you were to combine a full-price Sky TV subscription with one of the above plans, it may work out to be a more expensive solution overall.

Switching to Sky Broadband
If you’re currently using another broadband provider, it’s easy to switch your broadband service to Sky.
Start by ordering your new Gigafast broadband plan online. You’ll be given the activation date for your service when you sign up on Sky’s website. Normally, an engineer visit will also be scheduled for that date to set up the service.
Normally, Sky will automatically contact your old broadband provider to cancel your old service. However, if you’re using Virgin Media (or any other provider that doesn’t use the Openreach network), you’ll need to contact them separately to cancel your old service.
