EE offers fibre & full fibre broadband plans. You can unlock £10 unlimited data SIMs with their broadband, plus features like Smart WiFi & WiFi Enhancer.

In the UK, EE has relaunched their home broadband service, taking over as the BT Group’s flagship consumer brand.

On EE, you can now get fibre broadband and full fibre broadband with download speeds of up to 1.6Gbps. You’ll also get the latest Smart Hub Plus router included on your plan with support for WiFi 6 technology and WiFi Controls. Optional add-ons are available on top of this like Smart WiFi, Hybrid Connect and WiFi Enhancer.

As an EE broadband customer, you can unlock unlimited data SIM cards from just £10 per month on a monthly rolling basis (for speeds of up to 10Mbps). This can save you a significant amount of money on your mobile phone when you’re an EE broadband customer.

In this article, we’ll review EE’s new home broadband service, including the different plans and features available. We’ll also look at the speeds you can expect on EE broadband, and how you can switch to EE from your current home broadband provider.

EE Broadband Plans

In the UK, EE now offers a choice of fibre broadband and full fibre broadband plans:

• Fibre Broadband starts from £29.99 per month. It uses fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology to deliver average download speeds of up to 67Mbps.
• Full Fibre Broadband starts from £29.99 per month. It uses fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology, with a fibre optic cable going all the way into your home. This gives you faster download speeds of up to 900Mbps (or 1.6Gbps in selected areas). You’ll also get a more reliable connection with lower amounts of latency. EE’s full fibre broadband is currently available in around 10 million UK homes.

Fibre Broadband Plans

If you’re living at an address with access to regular fibre broadband (also known as fibre-to-the-cabinet or FTTC broadband), you’ll be able to choose from the following three plans on EE:

• Fibre 36 gives you average download speeds of 36Mbps.
• Fibre 50 gives you average download speeds of 50Mbps.
• Fibre 67 gives you an average download speed of 67Mbps. This also comes with EE’s Full Fibre Guarantee. With this, they’ll give you a free upgrade to full fibre technology (FTTP) when it becomes available in your home.

With regular fibre broadband plans, the final part of the connection between the street cabinet and your home uses a copper connection. For this reason, the speeds available at your address will vary based on the distance to your nearest street cabinet (it’s also affected by the quality of your line).

Full Fibre Plans

If you’re living at an address with access to full fibre (FTTP) technology on the Openreach network, you’ll be able to choose from the following Full Fibre plans on EE:

• Full Fibre 74 gives you average download speeds of 74Mbps.
• Full Fibre 150 gives you average download speeds of 150Mbps.
• Full Fibre 300 gives you average download speeds of 300Mbps.
• Full Fibre 500 gives you average download speeds of 500Mbps. You’ll also get 6 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate included.
• Full Fibre Gigabit gives you average download speeds of 900Mbps. You’ll also get 12 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate included on this plan. This plan is also available in a ‘Full Works’ version. If you upgrade to it, you’ll get Smart WiFi Plus, Hybrid Connect, EE Cyber Security and an expert home visit included in the price.

In certain areas (parts of Swansea and Ipswich), EE is also offering the option of a faster 1.6Gbps plan on full fibre. This is priced at £66.99 per month. In 2024, this 1.6Gbps plan should become more widely available across the UK.

Other Broadband Plans

Unfortunately, EE no longer offers an ADSL (copper) broadband service.

If you’re living at an address where you’re not able to get EE’s fibre broadband service, you can get EE’s 4G or 5G home broadband instead.

According to EE, this can deliver average download speeds of 40Mbps on 4G and 146Mbps on 5G. However, these speeds can vary wildly based on your location, and based on the number of other users in your area. For this reason, we’d typically recommend choosing a fibre broadband plan as this will give you a more reliable and consistent experience.

EE Mobile Benefits

If you’re an EE broadband customer with one of their latest plans, you’ll be able to unlock the following unlimited data benefits on your EE mobile phone:

• Unlimited data SIM cards from £10pm. You’ll normally need to pay at least £27 per month for unlimited data on EE (this is on a 24-month contract). However, if you’re an EE broadband customer, you can get unlimited data from just £10 per month on a 30-day rolling basis (with download speeds of up to 10Mbps).
• Unlimited data on your existing plans costing £10pm or more. If you already have existing mobile plans with EE costing £10 per month or more, these will be upgraded to give you unlimited data. You’ll also be able to switch to one of their unlimited data SIMs from £10pm when your plan becomes eligible for an upgrade.

EE’s “unlimited data unlocked” benefit is only available if you’re on one of their latest broadband plans (available since August 2023). These qualifying plans will be labelled as Essentials, All Rounder, Full Works or the Busiest Home Bundle on your bill. If you’re on one of EE’s older broadband plans, you may be eligible for their mobile data boost benefit instead.

Smart Hub Plus

You’ll get the Smart Hub Plus included on all of EE’s latest home broadband plans (also known as the Smart Hub 3).

The ‘Smart Hub Plus’ is EE’s most advanced router to-date and it’s the first to have support for the latest WiFi 6 technology (802.11ax). This delivers better performance, along with improved security and better battery life on compatible WiFi 6 devices.

You’ll be able to use the EE app to manage your home wi-fi network on the Smart Hub Plus. This includes pausing and scheduling your WiFi (e.g. so you can pause the internet on your children’s devices during mealtimes and after bedtime). You can also set parental controls on a per-device basis.

Smart WiFi

For an extra £10 per month, you can add EE’s Smart WiFi service (also known as Smart WiFi Plus). This gives you a guaranteed WiFi connection in every room of your home.

When you sign up to Smart WiFi Plus, you’ll be given one ‘Smart WiFi Device’. This uses mesh technology to boost the range of your home WiFi network. It gives you one seamless network that covers your whole home, so there’s no need to sign in to different WiFi networks as you walk around your home.

If you’re unable to get a WiFi signal in every room of your home with one Smart WiFi Device, you can request two more devices from EE at no extra cost. Once you’ve done that, and if you’re still unable to get WiFi in every room of your home, you’ll be able to claim £100 back on your next bill from EE.

Smart Hybrid Connect

For an extra £7 per month, you can add EE’s Smart Hybrid Connect. This will use EE’s 4G mobile network to keep you connected to the internet, should there be a fault with the fibre broadband connection into your home.

The main advantage of Smart Hybrid Connect is how it works seamlessly and transparently to keep all of your devices online. If a fault is detected with your fibre broadband connection, it will automatically switch your entire network over to a 4G connection in the background. All of your devices will then stay online without you needing to lift a finger. You’ll also continue to benefit from settings such as your parental controls.

The Smart Hybrid Connect service comes with unlimited data and download speeds of up to 30Mbps. According to EE, it can be used when your fibre broadband service is down, or if you’re moving home and your fibre broadband service hasn’t been set up yet. Certain features like the WiFi Enhancer and Digital Home Phone won’t work when your connected to 4G but most of your other devices should stay connected without any problems.

WiFi Enhancer – Work & Game Mode

For an extra £5 per month, you can add EE’s WiFi Enhancer service. This allows you to enable ‘work mode’ or ‘game mode’ on your fibre broadband connection:

• Work Mode: This will prioritise work-from-home applications on your network such as Zoom, Slack and Microsoft Teams.
• Game Mode: This will prioritise games on your network. You’ll get a ‘Geo Filter’ feature that helps you to find gaming servers with the lowest amount of lag. There’s also a ‘Ping Optimiser’ feature that’s designed to reduce the amount of lag when you’re playing games online.

In the background, EE’s WiFi Enhancer service is powered by Netduma. The service is available on a one-month rolling basis, so you can add it or remove it from your plan as you require.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate gives you access to more than 100 high-quality games including Starfield, Forza Motorspot, Halo, Minecraft, and more. You can play the games on your Xbox console, on a PC, or in the cloud. It sells for a RRP of £12.99 per month.

You’ll get up to 12 months of inclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate when you sign up on EE’s fastest Full Fibre plans:

• Full Fibre 500 comes with 6 months of inclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (worth £78).
• Full Fibre 900 comes with 12 months of inclusive Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (worth £156).

EE Broadband Speeds

When you’re choosing a fibre broadband plan on EE, your main consideration should be the speeds that you household requires.

As a point of reference, you’ll need about 5Mbps to stream HD-quality video on one device (or 25Mbps if you’re streaming in Ultra HD quality). Therefore, a download speed of 50Mbps would allow you to stream HD-quality video on up to ten devices at the same time (or Ultra HD video on two devices at the same time).

The average speeds quoted by EE are based on a national average of what 50% of customers are able to get during the peak hours each day (between 8pm and 10pm). For a personalised estimate of the speeds available where you live, you should enter your postcode on EE’s website.

All of EE’s broadband plans come with a minimum download speed guarantee. If you’re unable to get the minimum guaranteed speed, you may be eligible for a £5 per month discount on your bill. Alternatively, you might be able to cancel your plan early without penalty.

Switching to EE Broadband

If you’re switching from another broadband provider, it’s easy to move your broadband service to EE.

Start by signing up for your new EE broadband plan online. If you decide to add a EE home phone service, you’ll be able to keep your current home phone number if you like.

During the sign-up process, EE will give you the expected go-live date for your new service. This will typically be in around two weeks time. Until your service switches over to EE, your current service will continue to run so there’ll be minimal disruption to your broadband.

On the go-live date for your new EE broadband service, you’ll need to plug in the EE Smart Hub Plus to complete the switchover process. In addition, an engineer visit might be required if you’re getting full fibre broadband (FTTP) installed in your home for the first time.

Normally, your old broadband service will be cancelled automatically so there’s no need to contact your old provider. However, if you’re a customer of Virgin Media or another provider that doesn’t use the Openreach network, you’ll need to contact them separately to cancel your old service.
