Smart Wi-Fi is a £10/month add-on for EE home broadband, giving you mesh wi-fi with a EE Smart Router & Disc. You’ll also get a portable 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot.
In the UK, EE is now offering Smart Wi-Fi as an optional add-on for their EE home broadband plans. Costing an extra £10/month on top of your normal home broadband service, it gives you better wi-fi coverage across your whole home using mesh networking technology. You’ll also get 4G mobile broadband included, with 2GB of data per month on a 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot.
In this article, we’ll review EE’s Smart Wi-Fi service. We’ll start by looking at how Smart Wi-Fi works, including EE’s Smart Wi-Fi Router and Smart Wi-Fi Disc. We’ll also look at the 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot that allows you to stay connected on-the-go, or when your home broadband service goes down. Finally, we’ll discuss EE’s broadband plans with Smart Wi-Fi and similar products that are available from other internet service providers.
What is EE Smart Wi-Fi?
Smart Wi-Fi is an optional add-on for EE home broadband, costing £10/month for improved wi-fi both at home and outdoors. It comes with the next-generation EE Smart Wi-Fi Router and a clever Wi-Fi Disc which boosts the coverage in your home using mesh networking technology.
As part of the service, you’ll also get a 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot with 2GB of data per month for staying connected when you’re out and about. The data allowance on your hotspot will be boosted automatically up to 250GB if there’s ever a fault with your home broadband connection.
EE Smart Wi-Fi Router
If you choose to sign up for the Smart Wi-Fi service, you’ll get the upgraded EE Smart Wi-Fi Router instead. This supports dual-band Wi-Fi 5 technology (802.11ac) so you can get speeds of up to 1733Mbps on your home wi-fi network. The EE Smart Wi-Fi Router has seven built-in antenna to maximise the performance of your home wi-fi network.
The router can be managed through the EE Home app. This allows you to see all of the devices that are connected to your wi-fi network. You can also set up different groups of users with individual policies (e.g. switching the internet off for your children during mealtimes or after bedtime).
EE Smart Wi-Fi Disc
As part of the Smart Wi-Fi service, you’ll also receive an EE Smart Wi-Fi Disc. This Wi-Fi boosting disc links up to your EE Smart Wi-Fi Router and uses mesh networking technology to improve the wi-fi signal in your home.
There are several key benefits to using a Smart Wi-Fi Disc:
- If you currently lack a Wi-Fi signal in certain rooms of your home, a well-positioned Smart Wi-Fi Disc can boost the signal so you can get it in that room.
- If you’re suffering from poor Wi-Fi speeds, adding in a Smart Wi-Fi Disc can improve the situation. In a typical four-bedroom family home, you can see speed improvements of around 25% by adding in a Wi-Fi Disc.
- Wi-Fi Discs also allow you to have more devices connected to your home wi-fi network at the same time. According to EE, each Wi-Fi Disc is able to support up to 60 connected devices at the same time (up to 30 devices using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and up to 30 devices using 5GHz Wi-Fi).
As it uses mesh technology, you’ll have a single transparent wi-fi network covering your whole home. There’s no need to change wi-fi networks when you go into another room, or to manually choose from a list of different networks to find the one that offers the best performance where you are.
The Wi-Fi Disc can be set up using the EE Home app. This will also help you to find the best location for the Disc. If you’re still unable to get a good Wi-Fi connection across your whole home, you can ask EE to send you up to two additional Wi-Fi Discs (you’ll just need to pay a delivery charge of £6.99 per disc).
4GEE WiFi Mini Hotspot
With the Smart Wi-Fi Router and Smart Wi-Fi Disc, EE is trying to improve the quality of your Wi-Fi signal at home. With the 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot, things are different as this is all about having wi-fi connectivity and a 4G mobile broadband connection on-the-go.
You’ll receive a 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot when you sign up for the Smart Wi-Fi service. This is a battery-powered device, supporting Category 7 LTE speeds on EE’s 4G network (up to 300Mbps download and up to 100Mbps upload). You can share your 4G mobile broadband connection with up to 20 other devices, with the Wi-Fi network typically having a range of about 10 meters.
The 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot comes with 2GB of data per month included. This isn’t a huge amount but it should be fine for some occasional usage on-the-go.
As part of the Smart Wi-Fi service, EE promises to keep you “always connected”. Here, if there’s a fault with your home broadband connection, you’ll be given an extra 250GB of data on your 4GEE WiFi Mini. The extra data lasts for up to 30 days and allows you to use your 4G mobile broadband connection as a drop-in replacement for home broadband if that ever goes down.
Smart Wi-Fi Broadband Plans
You can add Smart Wi-Fi for an extra £10/month to any of the following EE home broadband plans:

If you’re an EE Pay Monthly mobile customer, you’ll get a 10% discount on the cost of your home broadband plan. For instance, a £30 broadband plan will only cost you £27/month if you’re an EE mobile customer. The cost of adding Smart Wi-Fi will still be £10/month, making a total cost of £37/month (no further discount is available on the cost of Smart Wi-Fi).
If you’re an existing EE home broadband customer, it will also be possible to add Smart Wi-Fi to your current price plan. This will cost you an extra £10/month and you’ll need to sign a new 18-month contract when you add this.
The EE Smart Wi-Fi Router becomes your property after 14 days on the service. Meanwhile, the EE Smart Wi-Fi Disc and 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot becomes your property after 6 months using the service.
BT Complete Wi-Fi
BT’s Complete Wi-Fi is a similar service for BT Broadband customers. It gives you a mesh wi-fi networking solution at home with guaranteed speeds of 10Mbps in every room of your home, or £100 back.
Behind the scenes, EE’s Smart Wi-Fi Router and Disc is actually a rebranded version of the Hub and Disc available on BT Complete Wi-Fi. For this reason, the hardware works in a very similar way. There are differences in the features elsewhere, however, like a guaranteed 10Mbps download speed on BT and an inclusive 4GEE WiFi Mini hotspot on EE broadband.
You can get fibre broadband on BT from £26.99/month (from £36.99/month with Complete Wi-Fi included).
For more information, see our full guide to BT Complete Wi-Fi.
Sky Broadband Boost
Sky offers a Broadband Boost service to their home broadband customers, giving you a guaranteed download speed of 3Mbps in every room of your home. Where necessary, they’ll send you a Sky Wi-Fi Booster to improve the speeds in your home, though this is a simple Wi-Fi repeater as opposed to a full mesh networking solution.
As part of the Broadband Boost service, you’ll also get daily line checks, inclusive Sky Broadband Buddy parental controls and engineer visits at no extra cost. If you’re a Sky Mobile customer, you’ll also get 2GB of data added to your Sky Piggybank if you experience an unplanned home broadband outage.
It costs £5/month to add Broadband Boost to any Sky Broadband plan. At present, standard broadband is available from £25/month on Sky, with fibre broadband available from £25/month. You’ll need to add an extra £5/month to get access to the Complete Wi-Fi service.
