Until the 4th February 2019, SMARTY is offering “three months for the price of one” on their flexible SIM-only plans. Customers can sign up to one of four commitment-free price plans and will receive three months of usage for their first payment.
The price plans on SMARTY start from £6.25/month for unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. With the “3 for 1” offer, this makes it possible to use your mobile phone between now and March for the equivalent of just £2.08/month. Customers wanting a larger data allowance can get 2GB of data for £7.50, 4GB of data for £10 and 8GB of data for £15 (equivalent to £2.50, £3.33 and £5 per month for the first 3 months).
In this article, we’ll review SMARTY’s January Sale offer. We’ll start by looking at how you can take advantage of the “3 for 1” offer, before discussing other features of SMARTY like the unused data discount. We’ll also look at how you can use SMARTY on a new mobile phone you’ve received this Christmas, the level of coverage you should expect and how to keep your existing phone number.
SMARTY’s “3 For 1” Offer
In the UK, SMARTY is a low-cost sub-brand of Three, designed to offer a “simple and honest” mobile service. Using Three’s 3G & 4G mobile network for coverage, customers receive the same 99% population coverage available on Three.
Along with the launch of a new price plan costing only £6.25/month, SMARTY is now offering “3 months for the price of 1” in their January Sale promotion. The promotion is available on the following four SIM-only tariffs:
For the average smartphone user, we’d typically recommend the £10/month plan with 4GB of data. Used in conjunction with the “3 months for the price of 1” offer, you’ll essentially pay just £3.33/month for the first three months (giving you unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 4GB of data per month).
Heavy data users can choose the £15 plan with 8GB of data, paying the equivalent of just £5/month for the first 3 months. Lighter users can choose the 1GB or 2GB plans, costing £6.25 and £7.50 respectively (equivalent to £2.08 and £2.50 per month for the first 3 months).
The “3 for 1” offer is available to new SMARTY customers signing up before the 4th February 2019.
Other SMARTY Features
Unused Data Discount
After the first three months, you’ll be able to benefit from SMARTY’s ongoing “unused data discount”. This will give you money off the following month’s bill for any data that you didn’t use the previous month. This discount is calculated at the rate of £1.25 per gigabyte, and has the effect of meaning you’ll pay the same amount regardless of which data plan you choose.
For instance, an example customer using 1.6GB of data per month would pay £7 regardless of which price plan they chose. The following example shows the calculations behind this, and the “unused data discount” received on each plan:

Because of how this pricing structure works, it is often advantageous to choose a larger data plan. This is especially the case if you don’t know how much data you need: a larger plan will give you some more flexibility but you’ll still only pay for the data you actually use.
The unused data discount is calculated based on the number of megabytes you have remaining unused at the end of the month (1MB = 0.001GB). This means you’ll receive a discount for the exact amount of data you have left unused, rather than only in gigabyte increments.
If you need to add more data to your price plan, it’s possible to purchase additional data at the rate of £1.25 per gigabyte. For instance, a customer using 1.6GB of data on the £6.25 ‘Extra Small’ plan with 1GB of data would pay an extra 75p for the extra 0.6GB above their monthly allowance. You can buy a cash add-on from £5 to pay for this extra usage.
Unlimited Minutes & Texts
All four of SMARTY’s price plans come with unlimited UK minutes and unlimited UK texts. You can use these inclusive minutes and texts for contacting UK landlines and UK mobiles on any network.

No Contract & No Credit Check
SMARTY advertises its service as a “commitment-free SIM-only plan”. To that extent, there is no need to sign a contract, or to commit to remaining on SMARTY for a given amount of time. You just need to pay for each month’s price plan in advance and there’s the ability to change your price plan at any time.
There is no need to undergo a credit check to join SMARTY. Price plans are paid for in advance using a credit card or debit card, and additional usage is only possible if you’ve added a “cash add-on” to your account. This means you have complete control over spending on your account without the possibility of unexpected bills.
SMARTY works on a “bring your own mobile phone” basis. You can insert a SMARTY SIM card into any unlocked mobile phone to benefit from the price plans and offers available.

3G & 4G Coverage From Three
SMARTY is a low-cost sub-brand of Three. Customers joining SMARTY will therefore receive the exact same coverage available to customers on Three.
At the time of writing, Three advertises 98.3% population coverage on 3G and 99.8% population coverage on 4G. You can check the coverage in your area by entering your postcode on the SMARTY coverage checker:
Like Three, SMARTY does not provide any 2G coverage and is not compatible with 2G-only handsets. You’ll therefore need to use a handset that supports at least 3G or 4G coverage.
Tethering or personal hotspot refers to the process of sharing your smartphone’s mobile broadband internet connection with other devices (e.g. with your laptop or tablet). It’s a great way of staying connected on other devices whilst you’re on-the-go.
Customers signing up for SMARTY and the “3 months for the price of 1” offer can use tethering or personal hotspot without any restrictions or speed limits. All of the data on your price plan can be used for tethering, and additional data is available at the normal rate of £1.25/GB.
You can use your SMARTY plan as normal with no additional costs when travelling in the EU.
If you’d like to use your mobile phone outside of Europe, this is possible on a ‘Pay As You Go’ basis. The SMARTY website has more information about how much it will cost to use your phone abroad in other countries.
Keeping Your Phone Number
If you’d like to keep your existing mobile number when switching to SMARTY, it’s a straightforward process to transfer it from your old mobile network.
To start off, you should order your new SIM card from the SMARTY website. You’ll get “3 months for the price of 1” until the 4th February 2019. The SIM card will initially come with a new temporary phone number which will allow you to test out the SIM card before transferring your phone number over.
Once you’ve ordered your SIM card from SMARTY, request a PAC Code from your old mobile network. Your old mobile network is legally obliged to provide you with a PAC Code free of charge within 2 hours of your request.
Once you’ve activated your new SMARTY SIM card, you can provide the PAC Code online through your SMARTY account dashboard. SMARTY will then schedule the transfer of your phone number, normally for the next working day.
