Sky Q is Sky’s flagship entertainment experience, giving you live TV, on-demand TV and apps in one place.
In the UK, you’ll now get Sky Q included as standard when you sign up for Sky’s television service from £25 per month. This is Sky’s flagship television viewing experience, and it also includes Sky Go for watching Sky TV channels on-the-go
With Sky Q, you’ll get a powerful set-top box that delivers all different kinds of entertainment to your TV. That includes all of your Sky TV channels (with Sky Sports and Sky Cinema if you have a subscription to those services) along with catch-up TV and on-demand services like Netflix. You can also use apps such as Spotify and YouTube on your Sky Q box.
In this article, we’ll look at the Sky Q set-top box. We’ll start by having a look at how Sky Q works before looking at some of the key features offered in more detail. We’ll also look at the Sky Go service that’s included and at the best Sky TV deals currently available in the UK.
What is Sky Q?
Sky is one of the UK’s most popular television providers, with more than 11 million households subscribing to a Sky TV service.
For Sky TV customers, the flagship entertainment experience is now offered through the Sky Q box. This is one of the most powerful and advanced set-top boxes available on the market, combining Sky’s satellite TV service with online streaming, catch-up and powerful applications. It also has the ability to pause & rewind live television and has capacity to store 500 hours of recorded television on the box.
If you add Ultra HD to your Sky TV package, your Sky Q box will also give you the latest cutting-edge viewing technology. It has support for ultra HD (4K) content along with High Dynamic Range (HDR). This means you’re able to get a sharper picture with richer colours and a more vibrant viewing experience. You can also use Dolby Atmos surround sound through your Sky Q box if you have a compatible surround sound system.
Sky Q Features
Your TV & Apps In One Place
With the Sky Q service, Sky has made a significant effort to give you all of your TV and applications together in one place. Alongside your live television channels, you’ll also get on-demand entertainment including catch-up TV and on-demand box sets. You can watch services including BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All4 and more directly from your Sky Q box.
If you have any online streaming services such as Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+, you’ll also be able to watch it through your Sky Q box. Other popular applications available for Sky Q include YouTube, YouTube Kids, Spotify, Peloton and Fiit.
If you have Sky’s Ultimate TV package which also includes Netflix, you’ll have your Netflix recommendations seamlessly integrated into the Sky Q interface. At present, you can get Sky TV together with Netflix for £25 per month.
Pause, Rewind & Record Live TV
The Sky Q box allows you to pause and rewind live television for up to one hour. That means you won’t need to miss a thing if you need to go and answer the phone or if something else comes up.
In addition, if you’re watching selected TV shows, Sky Cinema movies or live Premier League football matches, you can restart a programme from the beginning if you’ve missed the start of it.
You can record television programmes for watching at a later date, with capacity to store 500 hours of recordings on the Sky Q box. There’s also a handy series link feature which you can use to ensure every single episode in a TV series is recorded automatically.
Sky Q Remote with Voice Control
You’ll get a clever remote control included with your Sky Q box. You can use this as a normal remote control to navigate through the Sky Q interface, with built-in playback buttons for rewinding, pausing and fast-forwarding the programme you’re watching.
The Sky Q remote also has a neat voice control feature. This can save you time going through the menus as you simply need to say what you want to watch (e.g. you can say something like “Game of Thrones” or “Go to Sky One”). You can even search for programmes based on the name of the actor or director, or based on a famous quote from inside the film.
Another advantage of the Sky Q remote is the fact it uses Bluetooth technology. This means there’s no need to point the remote at the box for it to work. In addition, there’s a “find my remote” feature. If you’re unable to find your remote, you can press the Q button on the front of your box. Your remote will then beep for 30 seconds, allowing you to easily locate it.
Watch In Multiple Rooms
If you add a Sky Multiscreen subscription to your Sky Q service, you’ll be able to watch Sky TV in multiple rooms at the same time.
The multiscreen service on Sky Q works through an additional Sky Q Mini box. This communicates with your main Sky Q box using a wi-fi signal so there’s no need to have a separate connection from your dish to each box. Furthermore, your Sky Q Mini box acts as a wi-fi booster if you have Sky Broadband in your home. This means it can also improve the wi-fi coverage for other devices in your home.
As the main Sky Q box and the Sky Q Mini boxes are all linked to each other, you can pause a programme in one room and resume it in another. You can also watch your recordings from any room. Each Sky Q box and Sky Q Mini box has its own parental controls setting, allowing you to use features like Kids Safe Mode on the TV accessed by your kids.
When you sign up to the Sky Multiscreen service, you’ll get one Sky Q Mini box included. You’ll also get Sky Go Extra which allows you to stream and download programmes on up to 4 other devices. If required, further Sky Q Mini boxes can be ordered after you sign up.
All of Sky’s television packages now include Sky Go at no extra cost. This allows you to watch your Sky TV channels on a wide range of different devices including your mobile phone, laptop and tablet. You can also watch on-demand entertainment from the channels in your Sky TV subscription (including more than 500 box sets offered on-demand by Sky).
As a Sky Q customer, you can connect the Sky Go app to your Sky Q box for additional functionality. For instance, you’ll be able to use the Sky Go app to schedule recordings on your Sky Q box. You can also play back the Sky Q recordings using the Sky Go app.
If you’re also a Sky Mobile customer, a major benefit is being able to stream from Sky Go without using your data. You’ll also get a free upgrade to Sky Go Extra included if you’re a Sky Mobile customer, allowing you to download programmes to watch offline at a later date.
The following Sky Mobile SIM cards start from £6 per month and give you unlimited data for streaming on Sky’s mobile applications:
