BT Mobile Family SIMIf multiple members of your family want a SIM card from BT Mobile, BT’s Family SIM offer can save you up to 45% on the normal monthly price. The Family SIM discount is available when multiple SIM cards are added to one combined Family plan. Each person continues to have their own individual allowance and additional SIM cards have only a 30-day contract.

In this article, we’ll review the Family SIM offer from BT Mobile. We’ll look at the Family SIMs available including the 2GB, 6GB and 15GB Family plans. We’ll also look at the features of the SIM card, and at how you can manage your BT Family SIM accounts. Finally, we’ll look at the coverage you can expect on BT Mobile and how to keep your existing phone number when moving to BT Mobile.

BTIn the UK, BT Mobile is a 4G mobile network, with 99% population coverage from EE.

Typically, BT offers a range of stand-alone mobile deals. For instance, customers can get a handset on a 24-month contract or can get a new BT Mobile SIM card on a 12-month contract.

Customers living in a BT Broadband household get a discount of £5/month on BT Mobile tariffs (this is already shown in the table above).

For families wanting more than one SIM card, a further discount is available through the Family SIM offer:

The Family SIM offer gives you a discount on additional SIM cards.
  • BT Mobile 2GB Plan – Normally £10/month. Your second SIM card will cost £8/month, dropping to £5/month for the fifth SIM card.
  • BT Mobile 6GB Plan – Normally £15/month. Your second SIM card will cost £12/month, dropping to £7/month for the fifth SIM card.
  • BT Mobile 15GB Plan – Normally £20/month. Your second SIM card will cost £15/month, dropping to £10/month for the fifth SIM card.
  • BT Mobile 500MB Plan – No further Family SIM discounts are available. You can buy multiple SIM cards for £5/month (or £10/month if you’re living in a non-BT Broadband household).

With Family SIM, each person has their own individual allowance. Additional SIM cards are on a 30-day contract rather than 12-month contract, giving you greater flexibility than on a standard BT Mobile SIM card.

2GB Family Plan

On BT Mobile, the 2GB SIM-only plan normally costs £10/month (£15/month if you’re not living in a BT Broadband household). This gives you 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of high-speed 4G internet.

When purchasing further 2GB SIM cards on the Family SIM offer, you can save money as follows:

Number of 2GB SIMs Monthly Cost of SIM Total Monthly Cost*
First SIM £10/month (BT Broadband household)
£15/month (non-BT Broadband household)
£10/month
Second SIM £8/month £18/month
Third SIM £7/month £25/month
Fourth SIM £6/month £31/month
Fifth SIM £5/month £36/month

* The ‘total monthly cost’ assumes you’re living in a BT Broadband household. If you’re not living in a BT Broadband household, you should add £5/month to the total monthly cost.

If you were to buy five 2GB Family SIM cards, you’d save a total of £14/month. This represents a saving of 28% compared to buying the SIM cards without the Family SIM offer. For customers not living in a BT Broadband household, the savings can be even bigger (up to 45%).

Note: BT Mobile occasionally has gift card promotions. With the Family SIM offer, it’s worth being aware you’ll only receive the gift card once. For this reason, depending on the value of the gift card, it may sometimes work out better value to order individual SIM cards without the Family SIM discount.

6GB Family Plan

The BT Mobile 6GB Plan comes with unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 6GB of 4G internet. This is for a regular monthly cost of £15/month (or £20/month if you’re living in a non-BT Broadband household).

When purchasing multiple 6GB SIM cards on the Family SIM offer, you can save money as follows:

Number of 6GB SIMs Monthly Cost of SIM Total Monthly Cost*
First SIM £15/month (BT Broadband household)
£20/month (non-BT Broadband household)
£15/month
Second SIM £12/month £27/month
Third SIM £10/month £37/month
Fourth SIM £8/month £45/month
Fifth SIM £7/month £52/month

* The ‘total monthly cost’ assumes you’re living in a BT Broadband household. If you’re not living in a BT Broadband household, you should add £5/month to the total monthly cost.

For instance, if were to buy five Family SIM cards with 6GB of data, you’d save £23/month on the full price (this is equivalent to a 31% discount). If you’re living in a non-BT Broadband household, the saving would be up to 43%.

15GB Family Plan

At present, BT’s flagship mobile plan is their 15GB tariff with unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 15GB of 4G internet. This normally costs £20/month (or £25/month if you’re living in a non-BT Broadband household).

If you were to buy multiple Family SIM cards with 15GB of data, you’d save money as follows:

Number of 15GB SIMs Monthly Cost of SIM Total Monthly Cost*
First SIM £20/month (BT Broadband household)
£25/month (non-BT Broadband household)
£20/month
Second SIM £15/month £35/month
Third SIM £13/month £48/month
Fourth SIM £11/month £59/month
Fifth SIM £10/month £69/month

* The ‘total monthly cost’ assumes you’re living in a BT Broadband household. If you’re not living in a BT Broadband household, you should add £5/month to the total monthly cost.

For someone buying five Family SIM cards with 15GB of data, the total saving would be £31/month (this would be 31% cheaper than buying five individual SIM cards). For customers not living in a BT Broadband household, the saving would be £51/month (41% off).

500MB Family Plan

Unfortunately, there are no further Family SIM discounts available on the BT Mobile 500MB plan. However, you can still order individual SIM cards for each person in your family, and you can benefit from a £5/month discount on each SIM card if you’re living in a BT Broadband household.

As you’ll be buying individual SIM cards, each SIM will be on a 12-month contract and will be charged for on a separate bill. If you’d like to benefit from the additional features of Family SIM, you should choose a plan with at least 2GB of data per month.

Features

30-Day Contract

A key benefit of BT’s Family SIM offer is additional SIM cards have only a 30-day contract. This gives a lot of extra flexibility as additional SIM cards can be added or removed at any time. Typically, if you were to buy individual SIM cards, each SIM card would have its own 12-month contract.

With Family SIM, only the first SIM card has a 12-month contract. Additional SIM cards have a 30-day contract.

Spend Control

Phone CallOn Family SIM, BT also provides enhanced spend control with the ability to manage your family SIM cards through a single online account.

From the get-go, a monthly spend cap will be applied to each of your Family SIM cards. This initial spend cap can range from £5 to £45 depending on your credit check status.

The spend cap places a hard limit on your out-of-allowance charges. For instance, if you had a Family SIM card costing £8/month, a £5 spend cap would mean you never pay more than £13 in a given month. This is a great way of preventing “bill shock”, particularly if you’re giving a SIM card to your children.

Through your online account, you can easily manage the spend cap for each of your Family SIM cards. For instance, you can reduce the spend cap to as little as £5 or you can increase it upwards to £200 (higher spend caps are subject to credit check status).

You can also delegate control on a SIM-by-SIM basis. Doing this would allow individual users to change their own spend cap and buy tariff add-ons. They would also be able to adjust parental controls and request a PAC Code for their own account. There are two levels of control available:

  • “Some controls” (Suitable for all ages). This is the default option. Individual users will be able to monitor their own usage, but only the billpayer can buy add-ons, change parental controls and adjust spend caps.
  • “Full controls” (Suitable for users over 18). This allows the individual user to buy add-ons, adjust parental controls and set their own spend cap.

The Family SIM billpayer is able to adjust controls at any time by logging in to their BT Mobile account and selecting the “Personalise your SIM” section.

Combined Bill

With Family SIM, you’ll receive one combined bill each month for all of your family’s mobile usage. This will be taken in one Direct Debit payment and can be combined with your BT Broadband bill if desired.

The billpayer is the person who signed up for Family SIM and is responsible for charges incurred on all SIM cards.

BT Wi-Fi

Each person with a BT Mobile Family SIM card will get unlimited access to BT Wi-Fi hotspots (previously known as BT Openzone).

There are currently more than 5 million BT Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK. Locations with a BT Wi-Fi hotspot include shopping centres, train stations, cafés, restaurants, service stations and more. You can enter your postcode on the BT Wi-Fi website to find nearby hotspots.

Typically, a standalone subscription to BT Wi-Fi costs £39/month on a 30-day contract or £15/month on a 12-month contract.

Existing Customers

If you’re already a BT Mobile customer, you can add Family SIM cards through the BT Mobile website. Please note that a new 12-month minimum term will apply on your main contract when you switch from individual SIM to the Family SIM offering.

If your family already has multiple BT Mobile accounts, you can save money by combining them into one Family SIM group. To do so, the primary bill payer needs to log in to their BT Mobile account. They should then click on ‘Manage your SIMs’ to invite people to join their Family SIM group.

If you’d like access to EE’s double-speed 4G network (with typical download speeds of around 24-30Mbps), you’ll need to buy BT’s Extra Speed add-on. This will cost £4/month for each SIM card on which you’d like to add Extra Speed 4G.

Tethering

Personal HotspotTethering or personal hotspot refers to the process of sharing your smartphone’s internet connection with other devices (e.g. with your laptop or tablet). It’s a convenient way of getting your other devices connected to the internet when you’re on-the-go.

Tethering and portable hotspot are supported on all BT Mobile Family SIM cards.

For more information about tethering on different UK networks, please see our guide to tethering in the UK.

Keeping Your Phone Number

It’s a straightforward process for everyone in your family to transfer their existing phone numbers over to BT Mobile.

BT Mobile Brand ImageOnce you’ve ordered your Family SIM cards from BT Mobile, you should ask everyone in your family to request a PAC Code from their old mobile network. This is a nine-digit code that authorises the transfer of the phone number to BT Mobile and must legally be provided by the old network within two hours of your request.

Once the new Family SIM cards have arrived and been activated, you can provide the PAC Codes to BT through this online form. Alternatively, you can contact BT Customer Care on 150 to do this over the phone. Phone numbers will normally be transferred on the next working day after you provide the PAC Code to BT. You can either transfer multiple phone numbers at the same time or you can do them one-by-one at a time that’s suitable for each person.
