All of these BT broadband deals include the following features as standard:
- Full fibre technology, if it’s available in your home. As long as it’s available at your address, BT will use the latest full fibre technology (FTTP) to deliver the broadband service to your home. This is the UK’s most reliable broadband technology and it gives you a faster and more consistent online experience. If full fibre technology isn’t yet available where you live, you’ll get their ‘Superfast Fibre’ instead, which uses part-fibre technology (also known as fibre-to-the-cabinet, or FTTC).
- Unlimited usage with no slowdowns. All of BT’s broadband deals now include unlimited data as standard, with no hidden limits or slowdowns for using too much data.
- Smart Hub router. You’ll get BT’s Smart Hub router included with their broadband service. This produces a Wi-Fi network for your other devices to connect to. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi 5 technology (802.11ac). While it’s not the latest technology as it lacks support for the newer Wi-Fi 6, it’s more than adequate for the majority of homes and the speeds on BT’s full fibre service.
- Norton anti-virus. You’ll get inclusive online security with BT Virus Protect, which is powered by Norton anti-virus technology. You’ll get 15 Virus Protect licenses included on Fibre 2 and above (or 2 licenses included on Fibre Essential and Fibre 1).
There are some things that are not included by default, such as a home phone (landline) service. If needed, you can add a digital phone line for an extra £5 per month (or just pick up a cheap SIM-only deal for your mobile phone and save yourself some money).
All of the reward card deals that are shown above are available on a 24-month contract. If you need more flexibility (e.g. because you’re a student, if you’re renting, or due to move soon), there are also 12-month contracts available on BT. However, the monthly price on these deals is typically about £8-10 more expensive than on the 24-month deals. You also won’t be able to benefit from the BT reward card offers on this page.
BT Broadband Add-Ons
If needed, the following add-ons are available for your BT broadband plan:
- EE TV: This is a flexible television service that works with your BT broadband connection. With it, you’ll get a set-top box (either the Apple TV 4K or the EE TV Box Pro). It will allow you to stream content like NOW Entertainment, Netflix, Discovery+, TNT Sports and Sky Sports, with no need for an aerial or dish. There are a range of different TV packages available, which you’re able to change from month-to-month.
- Complete Wi-Fi: This add-on gives you a guaranteed Wi-Fi signal in every room of your home. It does this using a Complete Wi-Fi Disc that boosts the signal from your Hub. If needed, up to two more Wi-Fi Discs are also available from BT. The Complete Wi-Fi service uses mesh technology to give you one seamless whole home Wi-Fi network. This is backed by a £100 money-back guarantee.
- Hybrid Connect: This will add a 4G broadband connection, to be used as backup in case there’s ever a fault with your fibre connection. The switchover between full fibre and 4G will happen seamlessly at the hub so all of your devices will remain connected to the internet without you needing to lift a finger. The backup connection is provided by EE’s 4G network.
- Digital Phone Line: If you need a home phone service, this is available for an extra £5 per month. It will allow you to keep your geographical phone number – the only difference to a traditional landline is that you’ll need to plug the phone into the back of your Smart Hub.
BT Broadband Speeds
If you’re trying to choose the best BT Broadband plan for your usage, it’s worth thinking about what you do using your home broadband and the maximum number of devices you’ll use at the same time.
For most households, streaming online video is the most bandwidth-heavy activity. You’ll need about 5Mbps for a HD stream and about 25Mbps for an Ultra HD (4K) stream. For instance, if you wanted to stream ultra HD video on 6 devices at a time, you would need 150Mbps of bandwidth.
The following table shows the average speeds you can expect on each BT Broadband plan:
BT Broadband Plan | Average Download Speed | Average Upload Speed |
---|---|---|
Copper Broadband (ADSL) | 10Mbps | 1Mbps |
Fibre Essential | 36Mbps | 9Mbps |
Fibre 1 | 50Mbps | 9Mbps |
Fibre 2 | 67Mbps | 18Mbps |
Full Fibre 150 (Full Fibre & G.fast) | 150Mbps | 30Mbps |
Full Fibre 300 (Full Fibre & G.fast) | 300Mbps | 49Mbps |
Full Fibre 500 (Full Fibre only) | 500Mbps | 73Mbps |
Full Fibre 900 (Full Fibre only) | 900Mbps | 110Mbps |
When you enter your address on the BT website, you’ll be given a personalised estimate of the speeds that will be available in your home. This will take into account the technology that’s available.
In general, full fibre customers will get very close to the advertised speed. However, customers on a part-fibre connection may see slower speeds in their area (this depends on the distance between your home and the nearest cabinet). You’ll also be given your ‘Stay Fast Guarantee’ speed on BT’s website.
Switching to BT Broadband
If you’re currently using another broadband provider, it’s easy switching to BT Broadband.
Start by ordering your new fibre broadband service from BT. You can do this on the BT website. If you’d like to keep your current home phone number, be sure to add a landline service to your plan and give your current phone number to BT.
Typically, it takes up to 14 days for your new BT Broadband service to be set-up. In advance of it going live, you’ll be sent your new Smart Hub router through the post. On the go-live date, you’ll need to unplug your old broadband router and replace it with the new Smart Hub from BT.
There’s no need for you to separately cancel your old broadband service, as BT will do this for you automatically as part of their One Touch Switch (OTS) service.

Hi Ken
Thanks for the info.
We currently have a BT Fibre 2 package. If we upgrade to a BT full fibre package (FTTP), how do they get the fibre optic cable into the house? Is there any digging involved outside/inside the property?
Thanks
Thomas
Ken replied:
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your comment. How does the existing BT phone line enter your property? They should be able to replace the existing line and connect it up in the same way (e.g. using the overhead poles).
Hope this helps,
Ken

Hi Ken,
Is Fibre 1 also available as an FTTP product?
I have FTTP availability to my house, but I don’t require the download speeds of Full Fibre 100 etc.
Thank you
Ken replied:
Hi Phil,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, Fibre 1 is also available as a FTTP product 🙂 I believe they’ll simply give you Fibre 1 on FTTP if there’s a FTTP connection available at your address.

Why don’t you mention the charge for line rental? Isn’t it a legal requirement?
Ken replied:
Hi David,
Thanks for your comment. The line rental charge is included within the prices shown 🙂
Hope this helps,

If I plug phones directly into the router’s phone socket how many phones does it support? In other words, what’s the ‘Ringer Equivalent Number’ (REN)?

If the Hub2 is used in Bridge mode (modem only?)(Aa we have a secure firewall device etc) then will the Hybrid system still work?

Thank you very much for your reply and all of the fine work you do which is very helpful.
Kind Regards

On these BT plans, and the others reviewed here, do you have to also pay for a phone line rental on top of the mentioned costs ?
Ken replied:
Hi Neil,
Thanks for your comment. The cost of your line rental is included within the advertised monthly price. This is now the case on all UK broadband providers as the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) changed the law to this regard in October 2016.
Hope this helps,
Ken
