Sky doesn’t currently offer anything faster than their 145Mbps Ultrafast plan. Back in 2019, there was some talk of them launching an Ultrafast 2 plan with average download speeds of 285Mbps. However, this plan has still not yet launched and it also hasn’t been mentioned since 2019. We expect that Sky have either decided to postpone or to cancel the launch of Ultrafast 2.

Other Providers

Alongside BT, EE, Shell Energy, Sky and TalkTalk, there are also a number of smaller providers that offer Gfast broadband in the UK. You can see a list of these smaller providers on the Openreach website.

Many other broadband providers are still yet to launch their Gfast plans in the UK:

Broadband Provider Gfast Expected Launch Date
NOW Broadband Gfast TBC – NOW TV is the low cost sub-brand of Sky. At present, their fastest broadband plan is Super Fibre which offers average download speed of 63Mbps. It’s yet to be announced when NOW Broadband will start offering their ultrafast (Gfast) plans.
Post Office Broadband Gfast TBC – At present, the Post Office doesn’t offer any Gfast broadband plans. They’re currently in the process of selling off their broadband service so we think it’s unlikely they’ll launch a Gfast service any time soon.
Plusnet Gfast TBC – Unfortunately, Plusnet do not currently offer any G.fast or ultrafast broadband plans. Plusnet is the low-cost provider within the BT Group so it’s likely that BT currently want to keep this technology for their own customers.
Vodafone Gfast TBC – Vodafone haven’t yet announced when they’ll start offering Gfast broadband in the UK. They currently offer Vodafone Gigafast broadband plans in homes with a full fibre (FTTP) connection.

What is Gfast?

In the UK, Gfast is an ultrafast broadband technology that can offer download speeds of up to 300Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps. This is around four times faster than regular fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband.

At present, Gfast technology is available in around 2.8 million homes across the UK (this equates to around 10% of all UK households). It’s installed through the addition of a Gfast side pod at your nearest Openreach street cabinet, as well as an engineer visit to your home. Typically, you’ll need to live within 300 metres of your nearest cabinet to get a Gfast broadband service.

In June 2020, Openreach paused the rollout of Gfast technology to additional homes in the UK. Instead, they’re now prioritising their full fibre (FTTP) rollout which will deliver even faster download speeds (up to 900Mbps).

If your home has already been enabled for Gfast technology, you’ll still be able to sign up for a new Gfast broadband deal. However, if your home isn’t yet enabled for Gfast technology, it’s unlikely you’ll get access to it in the near future.
