Whether you're joining Virgin Mobile or leaving for another network, it's a straightforward process to keep your existing phone number.
If you're leaving Virgin to join another network, or if you're leaving another network in order to join Virgin, it's super easy to keep your current phone number.
All you'll need to do is to request a PAC Code. It's totally free and the entire process of transferring your phone number should normally take no longer than one working day.
For detailed instructions, please choose the option that best applies to you:
- I'm leaving Virgin and joining another network
Transfer your Virgin Mobile phone number onto a different mobile network. - I'm joining Virgin from another network
Transfer your phone number from another mobile network to Virgin Mobile. - I'm upgrading my Virgin phone or SIM card
Transfer your phone number from one Virgin account to another Virgin account.
Leaving Virgin For Another Network
If you're leaving Virgin Mobile to join another mobile network, you can take your phone number with you using a PAC Code from Virgin.
There are three ways to request a Virgin PAC Code:
- Online: You can get a PAC Code from Virgin by logging in to the Virgin Mobile Account website.
- By Text Message: You can get a Virgin Mobile PAC Code sent to you via SMS text message. Text PAC followed by your date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format to 65075 to receive a PAC Code from Virgin.
- By Phone: You can get a PAC Code by calling Virgin Mobile. To do this, call them on 789 using your Virgin handset. Alternatively, dial 0345 6000 789 from any other phone. You'll need to call during Virgin's opening hours (Monday-Friday 8am-11.59pm, Saturday 8am-11.59pm, Sunday 8am-11.59pm).
It's always free to get a PAC Code from Virgin Mobile, and it's your legal entitlement to be able to recieve one. If any cancellation fees apply to your Virgin Mobile contract, they should also tell you what this will be at the same time as sending you a PAC Code.
The PAC Code you recieve from Virgin should begin with VRG and should be 9 digits long (e.g. VRG 123 456).
Once you have your Virgin Mobile PAC Code, you'll need to provide it to your new mobile network operator. For detailed instructions, please select your new mobile network from the following dropdown menu:
Don’t want to keep your Virgin phone number? You can request a STAC Code from Virgin instead.
Virgin STAC Code (Leave Virgin Without Keeping Your Number)
If you’d like to leave Virgin Mobile without keeping your current phone number, you’ll need to request a Virgin STAC Code rather than a PAC Code. There are three ways to get a STAC Code from Virgin:
- Online: You can get a STAC Code from Virgin by logging in to the Virgin Mobile Account website.
- By Text Message: You can get a Virgin Mobile STAC Code sent to you via SMS text message. Text STAC followed by your date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format to 75075 to receive a STAC Code from Virgin.
- By Phone: You can get a STAC Code by calling Virgin Mobile. Call them on 789 using your Virgin handset. Alternatively, dial 0345 6000 789 from any other phone. You'll need to call during Virgin's opening hours (Monday-Friday 8am-11.59pm, Saturday 8am-11.59pm, Sunday 8am-11.59pm).
Once you’ve gotten your STAC Code, the rest of the process for joining your new mobile network remains the same. You can choose your new provider from the dropdown menu above for instructions on how to use your Virgin STAC Code.
Joining Virgin From Another Network
If you're joining Virgin Mobile from a different mobile network, you should ask your old mobile network to provide you with a PAC Code. The PAC Code will allow you to transfer your phone number to Virgin Mobile.
After getting a PAC Code from your old network, you should order your new phone or SIM card directly from Virgin's website. For more information, please select the type of tariff you're wanting to move to:
For a full list of the latest Virgin deals, please see this page on Virgin Mobile's website.

When Your New Phone Arrives...
Once your new phone or SIM card arrives from Virgin Mobile, switch it on and make sure everything's working correctly. If, for whatever reason, you need to return or change your handset or SIM card, it's best to do this before transferring your phone number.
Once you're happy to continue with the transfer, your PAC Code should be submitted through Virgin Mobile's online form. Alternatively, you can give the PAC Code to Virgin Mobile by calling 789 on your Virgin Mobile handset. You can also call 0345 6000 789 from any other phone.
If your PAC Code is provided before 6pm, your phone number transfer will normally be scheduled for the next working day (Monday to Friday only, excluding English bank holidays). For PAC Codes submitted after the 6pm cut-off, you'll need to wait one extra working day for your number to be transferred.
Sometimes, you’ll be given the option to provide a PAC Code at the same time as when you order your new phone or SIM card. We’d typically recommend against providing your PAC Code at this stage. Instead, waiting for the new phone or SIM card to arrive from Virgin Mobile first will allow you to make sure it’s working correctly and will make the process of cancelling or returning much easier.
Upgrading Your Plan On Virgin
If you're simply upgrading to a newer handset or tariff, it's not necessary to get a Virgin Mobile PAC Code. You can simply upgrade via Virgin Mobile's website. For more information, please select the type of Virgin price plan you're planning to move to:

I had a full Virgin package incl TV/Broadband installed last week. I gave my BT Pac code, but my number didnt transfer. After 60 mins on the phone I was told it had “expired” due to the delay getting Virgin to do the installation. Phoned BT for another Pac code but now I’m facing another 60 min call to the call centre, who arent open on evenings it seems and I guess are running under staffed anyway. I cant even get logged on via internet yet (to virgin mobile – other virgin services website is fine) and am stranded, and if I’m honest pretty unhappy. Customer services in this day and age should be so much better than this. Even BT only took 2 mins to sort me a Pac code. Getting hold of Virgin mobile is proving a nightmare and frankly a poor experience.

Great site,Ken – you’ve done some excellent work. I wanted ro contribute my experience:
I moved from Three to Virgin yesterday, the process was seemless. Steps:
*There is no online form, you will have to call*
1. Tuesday: from new Virgin SIM, I called Virgin CS on 789 (then option 2, then 5), waited 15 mins.
2. After going through security, I handed over my PAC (which I had gotten from Three earlier) and number I wanted to keep. This was then checked and confirmed, and a transfer date given for Wednesday.
3. Wednesday: I periodically put both phones in airplane mode, by 11 the transfer was done. Old SIM was SIM active for a while but the transfer was done.

Hi.
I currently have a new contract sim and new phone. IPhone XR with Virgin.
Boxed and ready to go along with the use of contract.
I also have a pay as you go Number with Virgin.
However want to be advised and confident on the best way to do this as I have a pay as you go Virgin contract and want to keep my number and switch it to the new phone. I have also obtained the PAC number.
As customer services aren’t available at this time ( understand due to the Covid 19) and have been on hold for at least 1-2 hours a day please advise on the easiest and best way to complete this quickly. Thanks in advance for your help.
Ian t transferred a phone number within Virgin Mobile.
Ken replied:
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your comment. Usually the best thing to do would be to ask Virgin Mobile Customer Services to do this for you. However, as a workaround, it is also possible to transfer your phone number to another network and then back onto Virgin. You can get a free Pay As You Go SIM card from another network for the purposes of doing this.
Hope this helps,

How long does it take for the number to port over…from virgin paygo to asda mobile? It’s nearly 24 hrs now and i haven’t been notified of anything….number hasn’t ported over either??
Jk transferred a phone number from Virgin Mobile to ASDA Mobile.
Ken replied:
Hi Jk,
It should normally take about one working day for your phone number to move over – you can see the table here for the expected timeline for the transfer. If it’s taking longer than expected, you should contact your new network (ASDA Mobile in this case) who should be able to give you an update on it.

Can you please confirm that I have done so and that I will not be billed for next month by Vodafone.

Ken replied:
Hi Geraldine,
Thanks for your comment. You’ve reached a third-party website so I wouldn’t be able to check this for you. Instead, the best thing to do is to give Vodafone a call on 03333 040 191.

Transferred from Tesco Mobile to Virgin Mobile using the PAC method but Tesco M have been demanding a months payment even though I did this 2 weeks before the DD was due (which I then cancelled). Do they have grounds for this?
Adrian transferred a phone number from Tesco Mobile to Virgin Mobile.
Ken replied:
Hi Adrian,
Thanks for your comment. Are you outside the minimum term of your contract with Tesco Mobile? If so, they won’t be allowed to charge you after the date on which your phone number was transferred. This doesn’t apply, however, if you’re still within the minimum term of your contract.

Hi. I’ve moved from Vodafone to Virgin Mobile and advised them of my PAC code and was told it would be completed by midnight the next day (this was 1pm). Didn’t work, called Virgin again and was told to take out the SIM card, wait 2 minutes and that would definitely work. It didn’t. Third phone call, told it would be completed by midnight the next day. It wasn’t. It has now been “escalated as an urgent case” which will take 3-5 working days!! That’s 8 days not being able to receive calls or texts. And that’s on both my old number I’m trying to transfer and the new number Virgin gave me. Do you know who is responsible, Vodafone or Virgin Mobile? Not happy!!
Angela transferred a phone number from Vodafone to Virgin Mobile.
Ken replied:
Hi Angela,
I’m really sorry to hear about the problems you’ve had moving your phone number from Vodafone to Virgin. For issues with porting, it’s your new mobile network’s responsibility (so in this case, responsibility lies with Virgin). Whatever happens, I’d recommend putting this in writing with a formal complaint (both to ensure it’s dealt with ASAP but also for record). I believe Ofcom have said that compensation is also due in cases like yours where there is disruption to the phone number transfer.

Hi,
I can’t find my original post with your reply, but many thanks for getting back to me so quick. I’m still unable to receive calls and texts, it’s now been over 10 days. Virgin Mobile (new provider) are blaming Vodafone (previous provider) and vice versa. Seems I am stuck in the middle and have open accounts with both! And probably going to end up paying bills for both. I’ve sent an email of complaint to Virgin Mobile and not received a response, apparently they’ve been “trying to reach me by phone” but have been unsuccessful! Funny that, as the problem is not being able to receive calls! I just don’t know what to do as don’t want to lose my old number. I think Ofcom are going to need to be contacted.

Ken replied:
Hi Vic,
Thanks for your comment. As you aren’t planning to change mobile networks, it isn’t necessary for you to use a PAC Code. Instead, simply follow the instructions in my guide on how to replace your current SIM card with a smaller Micro SIM or Nano SIM.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your comment. The simplest way to do this is just to place your existing Virgin SIM card in the new handset! However, if you need to move the phone number from one SIM card to another, this is something that Virgin Mobile Customer Services should be able to do for you (dial 789 from your Virgin Mobile handset).

Hello, transferred from Vodafone to Virgin today and Virgin advised after I gave my pac code that I won’t have use of my phone until Tuesday midnight, which will be three and half days with no phone!
Is there anything I can do about this, can I use my Vodafone sim card in a different handset during this time??
Many thanks
Fiona transferred a phone number from Vodafone to Virgin Mobile.
Ken replied:
Hi Fiona,
Thanks for your comment. Are you still without coverage on your Virgin handset? It isn’t typically for you to be left without a phone when transferring your phone number. Whilst you’re waiting for the transfer, both mobile networks will typically work – it’s just your phone number will still be attached to the old SIM card from Vodafone, and your Virgin SIM card will have the temporary number.

Hi,
Having bought a new phone and decided to change network, I thought I had successfully ported my number from Virgin on a 30 day rolling contract to Giffgaff. The new phone is working well on the Giffgaff network with my old number. The old phone, however, is still allowing me to use Facebook and other apps such as Google Maps. Phone calls, texting and WhatsApp don’t work. I am confused about this as I thought that once my number ported over, everything would stop working on my old phone. Do I still have internet access for the rest of the 30 day contract that I had with Virgin? Has my contract with Virgin definitely been cancelled? Any help gratefully appreciated.
Wendy Jones transferred a phone number from Virgin Mobile to giffgaff.
Ken replied:
Hi Wendy,
Many thanks for getting in touch! Is your old phone (previously on Virgin Mobile) connected to wi-fi? Your old handset will still function fine and will allow you to access the internet over wi-fi without a functioning SIM card inside it (hence, the ability to use apps such as Facebook, etc). Of course, phone calls and text messages rely on you having a functioning SIM card so that’s why they’re no longer working after you transferred your phone number out. WhatsApp is a little bit of a special case – technically speaking, it doesn’t require you to have an active SIM card and works fine over wi-fi, but each phone number can only be registered to one phone (so it would have been deactivated on your old phone, when you set up and registered your number on your new phone).
Hope this helps,

Hi Michael,
Many thanks for your comment. In most cases, it’s much easier to unlock a handset whilst you’re still an active customer on it. For this reason, I’d probably advise unlocking your handset now if possible before moving your phone number over to Virgin Mobile.

Hi,
Last year I ported my Vodafone PAYG mobile number to Post Office Mobile with no problems. Unfortunately Post Office Mobile is now closing so I’ve now ported over to Virgin Mobile.
The first day after the port took place, I could make calls from my phone with the Virgin Mobile SIM installed, but calls to the newly ported number went to Post Office Mobile voicemail. That has finally been resolved and even texts work too. However …..
My Voicemail is inactive, even though I apparently have a voicemail, when I connect to the service (which I correctly set-up prior to the port per Virgin’s website) I get a message ““Calls to this number are barred”. The number shown on the mobile with the voicemail is +440027913000*** which is obviously incorrect for a UK number.
Also my online account with Virgin Mobile now shows a nil balance and just my initial temporary number from VM. My online account for Post Office Mobile still shows my number being there – I understand the 2 systems are not able to both show the ported number.
Having spoken to Virgin Mobile staff numerous times, they say the porting process had problems, From various Google searches it appear there are ‘files’ that are transferred over to the new operator, which appear not to have been done so. As my number was initially with Vodafone should it be they that transfer some files to Virgin Mobile, not Post Office Mobile, and if so, how can I get someone to actually do this.
Many thanks in advance for any help &/or advice you can offer.

Ken replied:
Hi Mike,
Sorry to hear about the problems you’re having transferring a phone number from the Post Office Mobile to Virgin Mobile. Unfortunately I can’t provide any more detailed advice here – it definitely sounds like something has gone wrong during the transfer process, but I think only Virgin Mobile will be able to investigate this for you (as the receiving network, they’re responsible for resolving your porting issues). If you’re struggling to get this problem resolved, I’d consider making a formal complaint in writing to Virgin (at the very least, this will get your problem escalated and hopefully resolved a bit faster).

Ken replied:
Hi Melvyn,
Thanks for the comment! If only it worked in such a fair way… unfortunately any remaining Pay As You Go credit will be forfeited during a number transfer. For Pay Monthly, it works slightly differently… if your account is in credit you’d then be able to claim a refund.
Sorry to bear the bad news for PAYG users: you’ll either need to use up remaining credit or you can instead donate it to charity (e.g. to Cancer Research UK). If you do neither, then it’s retained by Orange as profit.

Hi Ken,
If you use your temporary number before attempting to switch, does that mean that you can’t switch your number over?
I recently got a new phone and used the number provided to make calls and send texts, intending to switch my number over to my old phone number at a later date.
I got a PAC code from Virgin (my provider for my old pay as you go number) and phoned my new provider for my new contract, TalkMobile.
They said that ‘a PAC code can only be used at the point of sale not once you’ve started using it, so it can’t be done.’
Is this true? I have used a PAC code in the past to transfer an old number over to a new phone about a week after I bought the new phone, so I don’t see how it can be.
Thanks in advance for your help 🙂
Becca transferred a phone number from Virgin Mobile to Talkmobile.
Ken replied:
Hi Becca,
Thanks for getting in touch! I’ve just taken a look at the Talkmobile website and it seems like they have a really bizarre policy on number porting. When moving to Talkmobile PAYG, you can call up and provide your PAC code at any time. However, when moving to Talkmobile Pay Monthly, you need to provide your PAC code at the point of sale. As far as I’m aware, no other network enforces this requirement (you can normally port in your number at any time, even after using the temporary phone number). Sorry that this is not more helpful – you could perhaps discuss things with Talkmobile Customer Services and see whether they might be able to process the request for you. There is no technical limitation in the number porting system – the only limitation is from Talkmobile’s side.

Hi there 🙂 just a quick question to check if everything is going smoothly with my switch from an Orange SIM to a new Virgin one (changed to a new rolling contract with better coverage) – is it normal for my mobile internet, texts and calls on my new activated SIM/contract to be completely down during the “port date” (which if I understand it correctly is the 24-hour period for my PAC code to be transferred and for me to get my old number back). Hopefully this lack of service is just temporary and hopefully as soon as my new number is reset, my new contract and its features will be up and working as normal automatically?
Thanks 🙂

Ken replied:
Hi Kristian,
Thanks for getting in touch. When you lose coverage on the Virgin SIM, you should restart your phone. Upon doing this, the service should come back but with calls & texts to your old number now being routed to your new SIM.

Hi Kristian,
It’s really bizarre that texts are working but calls aren’t – sorry I don’t have an explanation for this. My recommendation would be to go to Virgin Customer Services (call 0845 6000 789 from your landline). For internet I’d normally recommend looking at your APN settings. You can find the APN settings for Virgin here. That said, the fact that calls aren’t working might indicate it’s another problem.
Sorry to not be of more assistance and I wish you the best of luck resolving the issue with Virgin. If you do find out the problem, it would be great to know so we can share this with other readers.
Many thanks,

Hi Paul,
Unfortunately there is a clause in the Vodafone contract that if you terminate early then "you must still pay all the line-rental charges until the end of the minimum period"
Vodafone Customer Services should really have informed you of this charge so you could try to appeal it to Vodafone based on that fact but unfortunately the contract does mention the charge.
Sorry Paul! 🙁

Hi Ken,
I have a dilema. I have recently taken out a contract with O2 but have my business number with Virgin. I have asked Virgin for my PAC to transfer the number accross and was given this imediately! But they did say that as soon as I gave my PAC to O2 then the service with Virgin would be terminated. So as fara as Virgin are concerned I will be without contact with business clients for 48hrs. However when I spoke with O2 they said this wasn’t the case. It will take 48hrs to give the PAC to the Portal company who transfers the numbers but in this time my number will still be with Virgin & working & there will be maybe 1 hour while numbers are being transfered after 48hrs where there will be a break in the service to my business number but that is all. WHICH IS TRUE? I dont want to do anything until I am sure about how long I will be without the use of my business number!! Thanks

Ken replied:
Hi Mal,
Thanks for your comment. O2 are right here: I recently had a similar experience switching from O2 to T-Mobile. Your Virgin SIM card will continue to work even after you have given the PAC code to O2. Once your number has been ported over to O2 (and not until then), your Virgin SIM card will be disabled. My number transfer happened overnight so I had no significant downtime at all.
Hope this helps 🙂
