On EE Smart plans, you can choose an inclusive Swappable Benefit like Amazon Prime Video, BritBox or BT Sport Ultimate.

In the UK, EE offers two types of Pay Monthly plan: EE Smart and EE Essential. If you choose EE Smart, you’ll get a Swappable Benefit included in the price.

You can choose from a range of swappable benefits like a subscription to content from Amazon Prime Video, BritBox or BT Sport. Alternatively, you can choose additional plan features like inclusive roaming in 5 countries outside Europe (the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia & New Zealand) or unlimited data for use on selected video services.

In this article, we’ll review and compare the Swappable Benefits that are available on EE Smart. We’ll begin with an overview of the available options, what you can do with each benefit and the devices that are covered by one. We’ll then discuss the individual benefits in more detail before covering some older Swappable Benefits that are no longer available to new customers.

Swappable Benefits on EE

In the UK, customers choosing an EE Smart price plan will receive a Swappable Benefit as a key feature of their service. You can choose from a range of five Swappable Benefits such as access to content (Amazon Prime Video, BritBox or BT Sport) or additional EE plan features (inclusive roaming in 5 countries outside Europe or unlimited data for use on selected video applications).

A key advantage of Swappable Benefits is you can change them at any time through the ‘Plans, Benefits & Add-Ons’ section of the My EE app. Alternatively, text SMART to 150. Once you’ve changed your Swappable Benefits, you’ll need to wait for another 30 days before you can change it again.

The following table gives an overview of the available options:

Swappable Benefit What is it? Devices Covered by Swappable Benefit
Content Swappable Benefits
Amazon Prime Video Gives you access to the Amazon Prime Video on-demand streaming service. Data usage still counts towards your normal allowance. Your smartphone, tablet, smart TV & other compatible devices
BritBox Gives you access to the BritBox streaming service which has on-demand content from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Data usage still counts towards your normal allowance. Your smartphone, tablet, smart TV & other compatible devices
BT Sport Ultimate Gives you access to the BT Sport mobile app with live and on-demand content from BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2, BT Sport 3 and BT Sport ESPN. Data usage still counts towards your normal allowance. Your EE smartphone only. TV casting add-on available for £5/month.
Additional Plan Features Swappable Benefits
Roam Further Pass Use the minutes, texts and data from your plan at no extra cost when travelling in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Your EE smartphone only.
Video Data Pass Stream from Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, BritBox, BT Sport, MTV Play, Netflix, TV Player and YouTube without using your data allowance. Subscriptions to individual services are not included. Your EE smartphone only.

You’ll choose your initial Swappable Benefit when signing up to an EE Smart Plan. After that, you can change your Swappable Benefit up to once every 30 days through the ‘Plans, Benefits & Add-Ons’ section of the My EE app. Alternatively, you can text SMART to 150 to change your Swappable Benefit.

If you joined EE before the 27th May 2020, there are two other Swappable Benefits you’re also able to choose from (EE’s Music Data Pass and Gamer’s Data Pass). These benefits are no longer available to new customers because the Reserve Data feature essentially makes them redundant.

Amazon Prime Video

You can choose a subscription to Amazon Prime Video as your Swappable Benefit on EE (worth £5.99/month). This allows you to watch a large number of films and TV shows on-demand including The Grand Tour and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. You can see the Amazon Prime Video website for a list of what is available on the service.

One of the good things about choosing Amazon Prime Video is that the subscription isn’t limited to only working on your EE smartphone. You’ll receive a full Prime Video subscription that can be used on any compatible device including your smart TV, laptop, tablet, console and more.

Unfortunately, the full Amazon Prime service isn’t available as a Swappable Benefit on EE so you won’t get free premium delivery, access to Amazon Prime Music or other Prime customer benefits. The full Amazon Prime service costs £7.99/month direct from Amazon.

BritBox

BritBox is a new video-on-demand service with the best of British entertainment from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. You can stream almost 300 box sets through the service including Top Gear, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Love Island, Peep Show and The Inbetweeners. All of the content is available to watch ad-free on the service.

You can choose a BritBox subscription as your Swappable Benefit on EE Smart (worth £5.99/month). This allows you to watch BritBox on your smartphone and laptop as well as on other compatible devices like Apple TV, Chromecast and selected smart TVs.

BT Sport Ultimate

One of the most popular options for a Swappable Benefit on EE is access to the BT Sport app. This benefit gives you access to live and on-demand content from BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2, BT Sport 3 and BT Sport ESPN. On those channels, you’ll be able to watch sporting action from the Premier League, Champions League, Bundesliga, WWE, UFC, boxing and more.

For customers joining EE Smart after the 27th May 2020, access to the BT Sport Ultimate channel is also included. This allows you to watch live sporting action in ultra-high definition and with HDR (high dynamic range) support.

The BT Sport Swappable Benefit only includes watching BT Sport on your EE smartphone. If you’d like to watch BT Sport on your TV, you can pay an extra £5/month to add Large Screen Access.

For more information, see our guide to how to get BT Sport in the UK.

Roam Further Pass

The Roam Further Pass allows you to use your minutes, texts and data at no extra cost when travelling in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand.

A 50GB per month fair usage policy applies to roaming in these countries, after which you’ll need to buy a roaming data add-on for that country.

Compared to EE’s standard international roaming rates, the Roam Further Pass can save you significant money on your travels. For instance, you’ll normally need to pay £1.20/minute, 60p/text and £4.80/day for 500MB of data in the USA. With the Roam Further Pass Swappable Benefit, you’ll be able to use your normal UK allowance at no extra charge.

When choosing your Swappable Benefits, remember it’s possible to change your benefits once every 30 days. For this reason, there isn’t a huge amount of benefit choosing the Roam Further Pass as your Swappable Benefit unless you have a trip planned away very soon. Instead, you’ll be better off choosing a different Swappable Benefit to start with and only changing to the Roam Further Pass just before your next trip abroad.

It isn’t possible to use your Reserve Data with the Roam Further Pass.

Video Data Pass

The Video Data Pass is available as a Swappable Benefit on EE Smart plans, with the exception of EE’s unlimited data plan. The pass allows you to use the following apps and services without it counting towards your download allowance:

  • Amazon Prime Video
  • BBC iPlayer
  • BritBox
  • BT Sport
  • MTV Play
  • Netflix
  • TV Player
  • YouTube

It’s important to note that the Video Data Pass only covers your data usage within the above applications. It doesn’t cover the subscription fee for the service itself – this is still payable in the normal way to the service provider you’re using. For instance, you’ll continue paying a subscription fee to Netflix of £5.99 to £11.99 per month. However, the data usage whilst you’re watching Netflix will be covered by the EE Video Data Pass.

Old Swappable Benefits

If you purchased your EE Smart plan before the 27th May 2020, you’ll also have the option of two other Swappable Benefits:

  • Music Data Pass: This gives you unlimited data for use on Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal and Spotify. It doesn’t cover the underlying subscription fee for the service.
  • Gamer’s Data Pass: This allows you to use the following apps and games without it counting towards your download allowance: Twitch, Pokémon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and FIFA Mobile.

It isn’t possible to choose these as Swappable Benefits on a new EE Smart plan taken out after the 27th May 2020. However, the new Reserve Data feature should easily cover your usage of these applications as you’ll essentially get unlimited data at speeds of up to 2Mbps. This should easily cover music streaming and these online games.
