What is BT Full Fibre 500?

In the UK, full fibre (also known as fibre-to-the-premises or FTTP) is the next generation of home broadband technology. It uses a fibre optic cable all the way into your home, giving you faster download speeds as there’s no slowdown from the use of older copper technology. Full fibre also gives you a more reliable connection, with a more consistent experience and lower amounts of lag.

Full Fibre 500 is one of BT’s fastest full fibre plans. Although it’s not their fastest plan available (which is Full Fibre 900), it already gives you download speeds that are more than seven times faster than Fibre 2 broadband on average. This makes it perfect for busy homes with lots of connected devices. For instance, you’ll be able to stream Ultra HD video on up to 20 devices at the same time. It’s also great for working-from-home and sharing large files, as well as playing games online with a smooth and uninterrupted experience.

BT Full Fibre 500 Features

Speed Guarantee

You’ll get a Stay Fast Speed Guarantee on Full Fibre 500. This means the speed of your broadband connection is guaranteed for the entire length of your plan, with expert support available from BT to improve the speeds if needed.

You’ll be shown your minimum guaranteed download speed when you order your Full Fibre 500 plan online. If the speed of the connection to your hub drops below this guaranteed minimum, you’ll be able to claim £20 back from BT. You’ll also be able to exit your contract without paying a charge. See the terms and conditions on BT’s website.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

You’ll get 6 months access to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate included when you sign up to Full Fibre 500. This gives you access to more than 100 high-quality Xbox games, with the ability to play on your console, on your PC, or directly from the cloud (including on your mobile phone or tablet). As part of this, there’s also an inclusive EA Play membership.

In our opinion, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a great companion for BT’s full fibre technology. That’s because the faster speeds and the lower latency of full fibre technology give you a really smooth experience when playing games online.

Online Security

On Full Fibre 500, you’ll get inclusive online security. This includes BT Virus Protect, which is BT’s anti-virus software, powered by Norton. You’ll get a license to use Virus Protect on up to 15 devices (including PC, Mac and Android devices). You’ll also get the Norton Password Manager included, allowing you to securely store your logins in a private online vault.

On top of the inclusive anti-virus software, you’ll get BT’s Web Protect service. This blocks potentially harmful websites from being accessed on your connection. There are also parental controls and Wi-Fi Controls on the Smart Hub 2.

Smart Hub 2 with Wi-Fi Controls

You’ll get BT’s Smart Hub 2 router included with Full Fibre 500. This will produce the Wi-Fi network for other devices to connect to in your home. It also has four Gigabit Ethernet sockets, allowing you to connect wired devices to your home network.

One of the benefits of the Smart Hub 2 is the built-in Wi-Fi Controls, allowing you to easily manage your home network using the My BT app. For instance, you’ll be able to pause your home Wi-Fi network, either for individual devices, for a group of devices, or for everyone. For example, you can switch off the internet during mealtimes or after bedtime. This helps to manage your family’s screen time.

TV & WiFi Add-Ons

There are a range of add-ons for the Full Fibre 500 plan:

  • EE TV: For a flexible television service that you can access over your full fibre connection, you can add EE TV to your Full Fibre 500 plan. There a range of EE TV packages available, with access to content such as NOW Entertainment, Netflix, Discovery+, TNT Sports, Sky Sports, and more. You’ll be able to stream all of your live TV and on-demand content using WiFi so there’s no need for an aerial or dish.
  • Complete Wi-Fi: Making use of mesh Wi-Fi technology, this gives a guaranteed Wi-Fi signal in every room of your home. As part of the service, you’ll get a Complete Wi-Fi Disc that boosts the signal from your Hub. If needed, up to two more Wi-Fi Discs are also available from BT. This is backed by a £100 money-back guarantee.
  • Hybrid Connect: This adds a 4G-based backup broadband connection, powered by EE’s 4G network. If there’s ever a fault with the fibre broadband connection into your home, it will switch you over to 4G broadband to keep you online. This happens seamlessly at the hub, so all of your devices will remain online without you needing to lift a finger.

Switching to BT

If you’re currently using another broadband provider, it’s easy switching your service to BT.

Start by ordering your new Full Fibre 500 plan online. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be given the go-live date for your service. If it’s your first time getting full fibre (FTTP) broadband, an engineer visit will be scheduled to install it.

In most cases, once you’ve ordered your plan, BT will automatically contact your old provider for you to cancel the old service. However, if you’re a customer of Virgin Media or another provider that doesn’t use the Openreach network, you’ll need to contact them separately to cancel.
