Sky Glass Features
Stream over WiFi
With Sky Glass, everything is streamed to your TV using WiFi. Because it has all of Sky’s technology built-in, there’s no need for a separate box or satellite dish when you’re using Sky Glass. When the Sky Glass TV is delivered to your home, you simply need to plug it in at the wall and connect it to your WiFi network to start watching.
Your home wi-fi network will need to have a minimum download speed of 10Mbps for you to use Sky Glass (or 25Mbps if you’re watching in 4K Ultra HD). According to Sky, these speeds should be available in around 98% of UK homes. There’s no need to be a Sky Broadband customer – you can use Sky Glass with any UK broadband provider.
Your Entertainment In One Place
The Sky Glass TV is powered by Entertainment OS. This brings all of your entertainment together in one place, making it easy to find and access what you’d like to watch. This is regardless of which live TV channel or on-demand streaming service it’s on.
Simply tell Sky Glass what you’d like to watch and it’ll search for that content across all of your connected apps, services and channels. This saves you the hassle of constantly hopping-in and hopping-out of different apps, and needing to remember which channel or service each programme is on. You can also add shows and movies from different services to your playlist, and all of your recommendations will appear in one place on the Sky Glass home screen.
Sky Glass can be connected to a wide range of on-demand services including BBC iPlayer, ITVX, All4, Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, Discovery+, and more.
You’ll get an inclusive subscription to Netflix and Discovery+ Entertainment and Sport with your plan. In addition, Paramount+ is also included if you’re a Sky Cinema customer.
4K Quantum Dot Display
The Sky Glass has a 4K Ultra HD display, making use of Quantum Dot technology for clear and sharp pictures on your TV. It also uses Intelligent Zonal (local dimming) technology to give you more contrast on the screen.
Sky Glass is available in a choice of three sizes: with a 43″ display (Small), with a 55″ display (Medium) and with a 65″ display (Large). According to Sky, the right model depends on the size of your room. The recommended viewing distances are 1.7m for the Small TV, 2.3m for the Medium TV and 2.7m for the Large TV.
Sky Glass also supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, giving you a richer and more vibrant viewing experience. This includes support for the HLG, HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR standards.
Sound System
In our opinion, one of the standout features of Sky Glass is the built-in sound system.
The six built-in speakers on Sky Glass can deliver up to 215W of clear Dolby Atmos surround sound. This is pretty much guaranteed to fill your living room with immersive sound, putting you right in the middle of the action when you’re watching live sports and the latest films on TV.
The surround sound speakers on Sky Glass are arranged in a 3.1.2 configuration, complete with two upwards-firing speakers to deliver the Dolby Atmos height effects.
If you’re watching TV late at night, you can activate the ‘Night mode’ feature to minimise disruption to others in your household. It does this by reducing the overall volume of your TV, whilst boosting the dialogue so you can still hear what is being said on the show. It will also dampen any extreme or sudden sounds such as engines, sirens and gunshots.
Alongside the built-in sound system, there are two far-field microphones, allowing you to control the TV with your voice. For instance, you simply need to say “Hello Sky” followed by what you’d like to watch.
Playlists & Recommendations
The Sky Glass television allows you to create a playlist of your favourite shows and movies, along with the other things you’d like to watch on TV. These playlists can incorporate live TV content through a cloud-based recording, as well as on-demand content from across your connected apps and services.
Your personalised recommendations on Sky Glass are taken from across your live TV channels, as well as from the apps and services that are connected to your Sky Glass TV. This makes it easy to find new things to watch, without the need to separately go in to different apps to see your recommendations.
Carbon Neutral TV
According to Sky, the Sky Glass is the world’s first CarbonNeutral certified TV.
To save power, your Sky Glass will automatically switch to standby if no motion is detected in your room for 50 minutes. In addition, the backlight on your Sky Glass TV will automatically adapt to the light levels in the room, helping to save energy when it isn’t required.
Sky has also promised to offset the carbon emissions associated with the average electrical usage of a Sky Glass television in the first year.
Sky Stream vs Sky Glass
If you’re not currently looking to upgrade your TV, you can get one of the latest Sky Stream deals instead.
With Sky Stream, you’ll get a small box that plugs into your existing TV. Like Sky Glass, it streams all of your content over Wi-Fi so there’s no need for a dish with Sky Stream. You’ll also get all of your entertainment together in one place, complete with your playlists, recommendations and more.
