With Sky Glass and Sky Broadband, you can get the latest streaming TV technology with next-generation full fibre broadband.
In the UK, both the way we watch TV and the way we connect to the internet are undergoing a rapid transformation in 2024. For starters, there’s the growth of streaming TV technology, which gives you more things to watch and new ways to watch it. Alongside that, the roll-out of full fibre (FTTP) broadband is rapidly gaining pace, giving the possibility of much faster speeds and a more reliable broadband connection.
If you’d like to upgrade your home this year with the latest streaming TV and full fibre technology, Sky is currently offering their Sky Glass TV together with full fibre broadband (subject to availability in your area).
In this article, we’ll look at the shift towards streaming TV technology and some of the cutting-edge features that you’ll find on the Sky Glass TV. We’ll then look at the best Sky Glass and Sky Broadband deals, along with the optional add-ons such as the Sky Live interactive camera.
Satellite TV vs Streaming TV
For many years, having a satellite dish has been the best way to watch TV. With a dish and with a satellite receiver box like Sky Q, you could watch hundreds of television channels including live sports, movies, and entertainment from around the world.
Although satellite TV is still around, it’s quickly being replaced by next-generation streaming TV technology. Instead of using a satellite dish and box to receive your channels, this makes use of the internet and WiFi to stream content direct to your TV.
There are multiple benefits to the streaming TV approach:
- You’ll get more content, and the ability to watch it on-demand. With satellite TV, there’s a one-way connection so you can only watch whatever is being shown live on TV (that’s unless you record it to your box, or if you use WiFi to stream it). With streaming technology, you have the ability to watch more things, and you can watch it whenever you like.
- You can take advantage of cloud-based features. You can stream from entire cloud-hosted libraries of shows and movies. For instance, Sky Glass comes with Netflix and Discovery+ at no extra cost as part of your service. There are also cloud-based recordings, so there’s no need to make your own recordings or to worry about a clash.
- There’s no need for a dish so it’s much easier to set up. With satellite TV, you’ll need to have a dish installed on the outside of your home. As well as this needing an engineer visit, it constrains where you can put your TV as this will need to be fairly close to where the cable enters your home. With streaming technology, it’s much easier to set up: simply connect to your home WiFi network and you’re then ready to go.
- Streaming is generally cheaper and more flexible than satellite. For instance, you can get the Sky Glass TV with streaming technology, along with Sky Entertainment and Netflix from just £40 per month. You can also choose from a range of different plans and contract lengths.
- There are new & interactive ways to watch streaming TV. For instance, one possibility that’s enabled by streaming technology is the ability to watch TV together with other households (using the Watch Together feature on Sky Live).
Sky Glass Streaming TV
In the UK, Sky Glass has led the move towards streaming TV technology.
It’s the first streaming TV to have Sky’s technology built-in, so there’s no need for a satellite dish or box. If you like, you can get it together with Sky Broadband for an all-in-one solution that gives you entertainment and connectivity in one package.
Once you’ve upgraded to the Sky Glass TV, all of your channels and shows will be streamed over WiFi. There are some clever features built-in such as the ability to control your TV using voice, and the ability to create playlists with content from across your channels and apps. You’ll also get your recommendations in one place from across all of your connected services, so there’s no need to hop between different apps and channels to find something to watch.
Another advantage of Sky Glass is the built-in sound system. It has six built-in speakers for powerful 360° Dolby Atmos sound, without the need for a soundbar. Alongside that, there’s a 4K Quantum Dot display and streaming technology built-in. That means there’s really nothing you need to do apart from to plug it in and connect it to your WiFi when you get it.
Sky Glass & Your Broadband
Instead of using a satellite connection, Sky Glass uses your home WiFi to stream all of your channels and shows from the internet. It works with any UK broadband provider, as long as you have a download speed of at least 25Mbps.
At the same time as upgrading your home to Sky Glass, it’s worth looking to see if you’re able to get the latest full fibre (FTTP) broadband from Sky.
With full fibre, you’ll be able to get download speeds of up to 900Mbps, allowing you to use more devices at the same time in your home. It’s also more reliable and there are lower amounts of latency, due to the dedicated fibre optic line going direct into your home.
If you’re not yet able to get full fibre broadband from Sky, it’s also possible to sign up on a regular fibre connection. You’ll then be able to upgrade to full fibre broadband, when it becomes available.
Sky Live Camera
The Sky Live camera is an optional add-on for the Sky Glass TV. It gives you four key additional benefits:
- You’ll be able to watch TV together with other households. The ‘Watch Together’ feature allows you to watch live TV channels and on-demand shows with up to 12 other households. You’ll be able to see and hear the other people watching the programme with you, even if they’re living somewhere else.
- You can video call on your TV. You can use the Zoom video conferencing software with Sky Live to video call your friends and family from around the world. The camera has auto-tracking technology so it will automatically keep everyone in the shot when you’re calling.
- You can play motion controlled games. There are a range of interactive motion-controlled games including Fruit Ninja, Whack-A-Mole and Starri. You’ll use your body as the controller for these immersive games.
- Work out with a digital coach. There are more than 130 interactive workouts available on Sky Live, including a range of strength, mobility, pilates, HIIT and yoga classes. The camera will continuously track 32 reference points on your body to give you real-time feedback on the accuracy of your moves.
