Find out the minimum top-up on each UK network and the available methods for topping up your handset.

Top Up LogoIn the UK, when you get a Pay As You Go SIM card, the top-up policy might differ depending on your mobile network. For instance, while most mobile networks allow you to top-up £5 each time, some mobile networks will require you to top-up a minimum of £10. On different mobile networks, the available methods for topping up your phone can also differ: for instance, only some mobile networks will allow you to top-up at a cashpoint.

In this article, we’ll review and compare the top-up policy on Pay As You Go networks in the UK. We’ll look at the minimum top-up amount on each UK network and we’ll discuss the available methods for actually topping up your handset. • If you’re topping up either by phone, by text or online, you’ll normally need a UK-registered credit card or debit card. Mastercard and Visa are universally accepted, with support for American Express being limited to some networks. Some, but not all, mobile networks will allow you to top-up using a card that’s registered outside the UK.
  • If you’re topping up with an electronic top-up card or top-up voucher, you can normally go to any retailer displaying the green top-up logo. This will include most UK supermarkets and convenience stores. You can also top-up at mobile phone stores and at your nearest branch of the Post Office. This is the best way of topping-up if you’d like to top-up with cash.
  • If you’re topping up at a cashpoint (ATM), you’ll need a UK-registered debit card or cash card. You should check to see whether your mobile network will accept a card from your bank (some mobile networks will only accept a card from certain banks).

  • Looks like Asda Mobile top up by text is now minimum £5. I tried today & got a reply saying please choose an amount from £5.

    • welcometopoland replied:

Yep. Greed everywhere. If you just want to make 1-2 calls a month, you must waste 5 quid on any network. They are pushing people onto the monthly plans.

  • Hi Ken
Thanks for a fantastically-informative web site.
Re Asda Mobile, I’ve just registered a card with a £1 top up. So in theory, I suppose you could keep registering new cards to do £1 top-ups. Lot of hassle, though, of course!

    • Further development. If you actually call 2732 and speak to an agent, it IS POSSIBLE to top up by £1 on an already registered card. I’ve just done it. 🙂

  • I just tested and Asda’s new network definitely does not allow £1 topups anymore, even by phone with a registered card. They do allow topups online now. Both have a minimum of £5.

  • some of the information on this web page is getting out of date. New Asda mobile wont let you top up with a voucher, and they are starting to use bundles only now – new vodafone style.
its getting harder to get traditional sim cards that dont expire after a few months and can be topped up via a voucher.

  • Hi Ken,
Thank you for a great source of information.
Would you know if the minimum top up is £10 but the monthly pay as you go sim is either £5 or £6 just wondered how this could work out?

    Thanks
    Lee

    • Hi Lee,
Thanks for your comment. What would happen is you’ll get £10 of credit on your account, but that would last you 2 months if your bundle cost £5 per month (so you’ll only need to top up every other month).
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

    • Hi John,
Thanks for your comment. I don’t believe Sky offer any Pay As You Go deals – so I don’t believe it’s possible to top it up. Instead, all of the charges are taken through a Direct Debit on the contract.

When does a Three pay as you go become inactive if you don’t keep topping it up? What is the maximum amount of time you can go without having to top up?
    Thanks.

    • Hi there,
I’ve got an article here covering Pay As You Go inactivity and minimum top-up requirements. However, to summarise in short: you’ll need to either top-up or to use your Three SIM card for a chargeable activity at least once every six months to keep your SIM card active.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

    • Hi Steve,
Thanks for your comment. I believe the £2 minimum top-up only applies to mobile broadband plans and the Data Reward SIM card? As far as I know, the minimum top-up is £5 if you have a regular Pay As You Go SIM card, though do let me know if you think I’m mistaken.
      Thanks,
      Ken

  • I have an Asda top-up card but forgot to use it to top up my mobile. Instead I mistakenly asked Sainsbury’s for an EE card. Looking at Asda site it will not accept any vouchers except Asda’s (this is logical). Is my only option to go back to Sainsbury and ask for refund, or exchange it for Asda (I read somewhere that Sainsbury do not sell Asda top-ups…?). Because of Covid 19 I am self-isolating and am unable to go out to Sainsbury’s so would need to do this online. Hope you are OK. Appreciate your advice.

    • Hi Carole,
Thanks for your comment. Sadly, it isn’t possible to use an EE top-up voucher on ASDA Mobile. Unfortunately, I don’t know if there’s an easy solution for this as I think the top-up voucher will probably also be non-refundable. You could potentially try to sell the voucher on to someone else, or you could give it to a friend or family member who can use it. You can also top-up your ASDA Mobile account by phone or text message by calling 2732.
Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help, and please stay safe during the current situation.
      Ken

  • Hi Ken,

Thank you for providing this website and a lot of useful information. I am looking into PAYG sims with a low minimum top up and a long validity for my father and it seems Vodafone are a good option. Do you know if you are still able to top up a minimum of £5?

    Thanks,
    Joseph

  • Hi Ken,
By reading this article I have been wondering what is an Electronic top-up card?
I am with Vodafone and i don’t their electronic top up cards. If I had a Vodafone electronic top up card how will I be able to top up using it?
Also what does a electronic top up card do?

    • Hi there,
An electronic top-up card is simply a plastic swipe card that you can use to top up your phone in a supermarket or other shops. It’s an alternative to buying a top-up voucher or providing the phone number you’d like topped up at the checkout. I don’t believe Vodafone provide these cards any more, though you could give them a ring on 191 if you’d like to double check. Generally, it’s now far easier to top-up your phone online anyway which I suspect is probably why they’ve stopped giving these out.
      Ken

  • Hi Ken
I’m homeless with no fixed abode or mailing address, I also don’t have a bank account or credit card. I hope to get a SIM for my Galaxy S4 which will allow me to pay cash with a pay as you go E-Top Up card. Is this possible and if so which network do you think will suit me the best.
    Taz.

    • Hi Taz,
Yes, you can get a Pay As You Go SIM card for around 99p in most supermarkets (or you can order a free SIM card online if you have an address that you’re able to get the SIM card sent to). On most major networks, you’ll be able to top-up in store at locations such as a supermarket or corner shop.
      Ken

  • Hi Ken,

I contacted you last month to let you know that EE were removing the option to top up via a cash machine. I have just been to two different banks and they have both told me that ALL networks have removed the option to top up from ALL cash machines.

    Phil

    • Hi Phil,
Thanks for the update on this. It’s disappointing this has been removed as a top-up option. I’m not really sure what the background to this is, but it feels counterproductive given the banks are struggling to keep their ATM networks in business…
      Ken

  • Hi. I’m not sure if you’re planning on updating this page any point soon, but I thought I’d get in touch. I’ve had a text from Barclays to say that EE would be withdrawing the facility to top up through a cash point. If forget he exact date, but it was in June. As I haven’t needed to top up recently, I haven’t had chance to verify this in person. Also, the text didn’t seem to indicate whether it would affect just Barclays cash points or whether it was a blanket thing for the whole cash point network.

I just find it odd that I’ve had no communication directly from EE themselves.

    • Hi Phil,
Thanks for the heads up on this – super helpful to know. I’ll make sure all of these changes are reflected the next time this page is updated. It’s a shame to hear that EE are removing this top-up option – I imagine it might be due to the high costs or relatively low usage of the service.
      Ken

    • Hi there,
Thanks for your comment. This is clarified in the section for ASDA Mobile: you can only get the £1 top-up when topping up by phone or text message (using credit or debit card). For e-top up card and voucher, the minimum top-up is £5.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

        • Hi Sam,
I’m not aware of an activation charge on ASDA Mobile – do you have more information about what you mean? It’s possible they might require the first top-up to be at least £5, but this should still remain as credit on your account (rather than being a pure activation fee).
          Ken

          • Actually sam is mistaken, there is no activation fee and your first top-up can be as little as £1.00.
You first create a new account and register your debit card by speaking to a real person after dialing 2732 from the phone the new sim is installed in. The real person does not take any money.
You then hang-up and redial 2732 and select the options (111) to top-up with your registered card – it’ll ask you to enter an amount in whole £’s that you want to top up – enter 1 then confirm. You will receive a text message stating you have topped-up with £1.00.

    This is a question ..
If you port your number from one network to another does it result in a poor signal?
How can i find out the best network connection in my area? I dont mind chaning my number as long as I get a good signal.

    • Hi Esther,
Many thanks for your comment. You’ll be pleased to know that number porting has no affect on the signal on your phone. You’ll get the exact same coverage as all other customers on your mobile network, including customers who haven’t ported their number in to that network.
      Ken

  • I ported my number from O2 to EE a few weeks ago. I purchased an EE sim card with the plan I wanted and as per request from EE, I topped up the new sim and activated the new plan with the temporary number ready to port my number across. I topped up at a local shop using the plastic swipe card containing the green top up logo.

The port went without without problem, but now I’m unsure if the top up card that came with the sim card will work again now that I have ported my number across. Are the top up swipe cards linked to the sim via the ling serial number or is it linked to the actual phone number? Can it be used again, or will I have to get a new one and link that to the number (ported) number?

Sorry if I’ve gone on a bit. I hope it’s clear what’s happened.

    • Hi Phil,
I believe it’s linked to the account rather than the phone number. However, if you have any doubts, follow the instructions here to make sure it’s still linked to your account:

Link an E top-up card to your phone:

Text 150 with ETU, followed by a space and then your 13-digit E top-up card number. For example: ETU 1234567891234

      Hope this helps,
      Ken

      • Thanks for the reply Ken. I tried what you suggested after the number had ported. I had a text come back saying that the card was already linked to another number. I’ve popped into an EE shop and picked up another card and have linked that.

  • I recently had a bad experience trying to top up an ASDA mobile account. As a privacy-focused person I only pay with cash, but there are no ASDA stores near me and it took me nearly 10 stores to find one that could sell me an ASDA voucher. (I didn’t have a top-up card.) Sainsbury’s wouldn’t, tesco wouldn’t, and numerous smaller shops wouldn’t. Perhaps you should note this lack of availability (compared to other prepaid networks) somewhere?

The one that did finally get me a voucher mentioned something about they make so little profit on it that they are hesitant to carry them… I’m not sure if there’s anything to that.

  • Ken. I’m just looking for a pay as you go voucher in an old phone for emergencies (out of battery, take weekend off from Smartphone etc). How long will the top up remain on Three if a don’t use it much? Or is there a better service for this arrangement? Thanks. Cliff

    • Hi Cliff,
Many thanks for your comment. There’s a blog post here answering this exact question in more detail but in short: your credit will last indefinitely providing you keep your account active (on Three, you’ll normally need to use your SIM card for a chargeable activity at least once every six months to keep it active).
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

  • Hi Ken, i noticed at the top of this article ‘March 2016’, is the information still up-to-date please? Also, do you have information on how long a number is retained by the customer if it is not topped up for a long time please? Thank you

    • Hi Sarah,
Thanks for the heads up about this! Most of the information should still be correct, though I recommend verifying it on the official websites through the links provided. Given it’s been a while since this was last updated, I’ll aim to give it a refresh in the coming months.
With regards to being able to retain the number during a period of inactivity, you can find more about this topic in this article.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

  • Hi Ken,

    Love the website, so informative.

Are retailers that accept E-top up cards/Top-up vouchers supposed to accept payment for rival networks if they are displaying the top-up logo? For example, Asda and Tesco refuse top-ups to the other’s network, but do top-up ‘mainstream’ providers like O2.

You would think these retailers would be glad of the sale, not to mention the great opportunity to bring in new mobile customers. Perhaps special mobile deals printed on their receipts.
    What are your thoughts?

    Regards, K

    • Hi Kevin,
Many thanks for your comment, and this is a very good question. I don’t believe there is any requirement for retailers to offer a top-up from rival supermarket mobile networks (so ASDA are under no obligation to allow you to top-up a Tesco Mobile account, and vice versa with Tesco allowing you to top-up an ASDA Mobile account). From my research into this issue, it seems to have been like this for at least a decade and I don’t believe the green top-up logo imposes any requirements on the retailer to offer top-ups for all networks.
As you say, however, I think it’s a little bit petty. If I were a Tesco Mobile customer and ASDA refused to top-up my Tesco Mobile handset, then that would only give me an additional reason to shop at Tesco instead. So yes, I also don’t agree with the approach the main supermarkets are taking, but unfortunately it will probably be tricky to change the mind of the people making the decisions in the supermarket.
      Ken

  • Ken,

would you happen to know if O2 allow you to top-up a pay-as-you-go service with a non-UK credit card?

    Cheers,

    Steve

    • Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, lots of UK mobile networks block the use of non-UK credit cards and debit cards. The reason for this is because mobile phone top-ups are seen as “high fraud risk”
Unfortunately, I don’t think the major mobile networks make it public information on whether they accept non-UK cards. So I’m not sure whether O2 allows this, though I believe giffgaff does allow the use of non-UK cards. giffgaff is a low-cost subsidiary of O2, so I’m not sure whether they share the same payments processor as O2.
Of course, if you’re in the UK, you can side-step this by topping up your phone in-person at a retail store. You can either top-up using cash or credit card, and there shouldn’t be any problems using an international credit card here.
      Hope this helps,
      Ken

      • Ken,

        thanks for the response.

Certainly EE allow me to use an overseas VISA card but in planning on switching over to O2 I was hoping I could find out.

I guess I’ll have to wait & see how it goes and if they don’t accept my “foreign” card then I’ll have to think of alternate measures.

        Cheers,

        Steve

    Hello Ken.
It’s been about two years since I wrote in about the farce of the new sim cards their incompatibility with the Nokia N8 and my battle with Asda Mobile.
I admitted defeat, bought a brand new Nokia Lumia 1020, gritted my teeth and stayed with Asda, good job too, as their latest offer is £10.00 / month 600 mins 1+ gb data and unlimited texts, suits me fine.
Anyway the new sims will definitely not work properly in the N8 because the gold contact pad on the card is TOO SHORT when inserted and locked in place with a “click”, the outer spring loaded phone contacts barely make contact with the gold pad and cause a shorting effect which corrupts the phones operating system, this caused my N8 to constantly be connected to the internet without my knowledge, refuse to send emails and send and receive texts when it felt like it.
I observed the idea on the internet of sticking a piece of sellotape to the back of a multi sim and not pushing the card in all the way in and trapping it with the cover, I didn’t try it, I don’t like bodges.
Does anyone know of a sim which will work properly in the N8 with out bodgery?

    Regards JB
