What is the Pixel 6a?

The Pixel 6a is a mid-range Android smartphone from Google. A powerful yet affordable device, it comes with the Google Tensor processor (the same processor found on the Pixel 6 Pro). This gives you super-smooth performance on your phone, along with clever AI-powered features such as automatic speech recognition, along with live translation without the need for an internet connection. There’s also a Magic Eraser feature for the camera, allowing you to remove unwanted objects from the background of your photos.

Design and Display

The Pixel 6a has a stylish and modern design that’s very much in keeping with Google’s other Pixel devices.

On the front of the device, you’ll find a large 6.1-inch screen at Full HD+ resolution (1080×2400 pixels, 429 pixels per inch). The screen uses Organic LED (OLED) technology to give you a sharp and vivid viewing experience, with good levels of brightness and a wide viewing angle. The screen is protected with Gorilla Glass 3. There’s also a fingerprint sensor hidden beneath the screen, allowing you to protect your phone and your data with biometric security.

The Pixel 6a is available in a choice of three colours: Sage, Chalk and Charcoal. On the rear of the device, you’ll find a dual-tone back, with a bar near the top of the phone for the two cameras and the LED flash.

The Pixel 6a is IP67-certified, meaning it is dust and water resistant up to a depth of 1m for 30 minutes at a time.

Camera

On the Pixel 6a, you’ll find a dual-lens rear camera system. This consists of a 12.2-megapixel main sensor with phase-detection auto-focus (PDAF) and optical image stabilisation (OIS) for clear, blur-free photos. There’s also a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor for taking wide outdoor shots.

The camera is backed up by some clever AI-powered photography features that are enabled by Google’s Tensor processor. This includes ‘Face Unblur’ which uses data from both of your phone’s camera sensors to ensure you get clear faces, even when the subject of your photo is moving. The Tensor processor also enables the Magic Eraser, which allows you to remove unwanted objects from the background of your photos.

There’s an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for taking selfies on the Pixel 6a.

Performance & Security

The Tensor processor on the Pixel 6a is backed with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage for your files. Alongside that, there’s support for 5G mobile networks, as well as Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technology, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2.

According to Google, the Pixel 6a has an additional layer of hardware security with the Titan M2 chip and the Google Tensor security core. Google has also committed to providing security updates on the Pixel 6a until July 2027.

Battery & Power

The Pixel 6a comes with a 4,410mAh battery. According to Google, this should give you over 24 hours battery life on one charge. The ‘Adaptive Battery’ feature helps this along by learning your favourite applications. It uses this data to save power on your device, reducing the battery consumption from apps that you rarely ever use.

For times when you’re away from a power socket and need your battery to last even longer, the Pixel 6a has an ‘Extreme Battery Saver’ mode that can extend the battery life of your phone up to 72 hours.

Alongside this, there’s support for fast charging at up to 18W so you can very quickly top-up the battery on your phone.
