Apple’s iPhone 8 is available to buy either on a SIM-free & unlocked basis or on a 24-month contract. We compare the UK’s cheapest deals.

The iPhone 8 is Apple’s latest smartphone. Defining a “new generation of the iPhone”, the iPhone 8 has an all-glass design and is engineered to be both water and dust resistant. With a 4.7-inch True Tone display, the iPhone 8 also comes with an improved 12-megapixel camera, an Apple A11 Bionic processor and support for wireless charging.

In the UK, the iPhone 8 is available to buy either on a SIM-free & unlocked basis or or a 24-month contract. Mobile networks offering the iPhone 8 on contract include BT Mobile, EE, giffgaff, iD Mobile, O2, Tesco Mobile, Three and Vodafone.

In this article, we’ll compare the cost of buying an iPhone 8, both on a SIM-free basis and on a 24-month contract. We’ll also compare the features available when you use the iPhone 8 on each UK mobile network.

In the UK, there are two ways to buy an iPhone 8:

  • SIM-Free & Unlocked. You can buy the iPhone 8 outright for a one-off fee starting at £699 for the version with 64GB of storage. This will allow you to use the iPhone 8 on any UK mobile network (e.g. you can choose a SIM-only deal or you can order a free Pay As You Go SIM card).
  • Pay Monthly. You can buy the iPhone 8 on a 24-month contract with airtime included. Prices start from around £45/month plus £100 upfront.

SIM Free & Unlocked

The simplest way to buy an iPhone 8 is to get it outright on a SIM-free basis. With this option, you’ll need to pay the full cost of the handset upfront. However, you’ll get an iPhone that can be used on any UK mobile network, so you’re then free to choose the best value SIM card to use in that iPhone.

Over the long-run, this can save you substantial amounts of money compared to a 24-month contract. For instance, if you were to get a £10/month SIM-only deal or Pay As You Go bundle, your total cost of ownership would add to about £940 over 24 months. For comparison, even the cheapest 24-month contracts will start from £1,100 over 24 months.

You can buy a SIM-free iPhone 8 from the following retailers:

Retailer iPhone 8 (64GB) iPhone 8 (256GB)
John Lewis £699.00 £849.00
Argos £699.00 £849.00
Carphone Warehouse £699.00 £849.00
Currys PC World £699.00 £849.00
Very £699.00 £849.00
Apple £699.00 £849.00

Apple has fairly strict controls over the pricing of a SIM-free iPhone 8 so it’s fairly rare to be able to find a discount on the recommended retail price (£699 for 64GB and £849 for 256GB). In practice, this means you might want to choose your SIM-free retailer based on other factors like ease of collection & delivery or the level of customer service available with that retailer.

If you’re ordering your iPhone 8 on a SIM-free basis, you’ll need to order your SIM card separately. For more information, see our recommended SIM-only deals and our guide to free Pay As You Go SIM cards.

Pay Monthly Contract

  • BT Mobile
  • EE
  • giffgaff
  • iD Mobile
  • O2
  • Tesco Mobile
  • Three
  • Vodafone

If you’d like to buy the iPhone 8 on a 24-month contract, you can currently choose from deals on BT Mobile, EE, giffgaff, iD Mobile, O2, Tesco Mobile, Three and Vodafone.

Key factors you should consider when choosing a mobile network include:

  • The amount of data you want on your plan. You can get an iPhone 8 contract with anything between 500MB (0.5GB) and 100GB of data per month. Data allowances and prices will vary across mobile networks.
  • The level of coverage available where you live & work. This should be a key consideration when choosing your next mobile network. Remember to check the coverage before ordering your new iPhone, or read our in-depth guide about the topic.
  • Other features available on the mobile network. For instance, EE offers Apple Music on their iPhone 8 plans and is the only mobile network compatible with the new Apple Watch Series 3.

In the following tables, we show the cheapest available deal on each mobile network for an iPhone 8 with various amounts of data. We recommend reading on to the rest of the article for information about the coverage and features available on each mobile network.

With 1GB of Data

If you’re a fairly light user who mainly uses wi-fi (e.g. when you’re at home or in the office), it’ll sometimes be possible to choose a plan with 1GB of monthly data. In the following table, we show the UK’s cheapest deals for an iPhone 8 with at least 1GB of data per month:

Customers buying an iPhone 8 on EE will get six months of free Apple Music (worth £9.99/month). There’s also inclusive access to the BT Sport application (for 24 months on 4GEE Max, or 3 months on all other plans). EE is also the only UK mobile network to have support for the Apple Watch Series 3.

giffgaff

giffgaffUnfortunately, giffgaff is not selling the iPhone 8 on their phone store at launch. However, you can still decide to buy the iPhone 8 elsewhere on a SIM-free basis, which can then be used with one of giffgaff’s SIM cards.

For instance, giffgaff provides a £10/month goodybag with 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of data. Combined with the purchase of a 64GB iPhone 8, the total cost of ownership would be approximately £939 over 24 months (£699 upfront for the handset plus £240 for the monthly goodybags).

  • Hi Ken
the cheapest way to get hold of an iphone 7 32gb model is from Giffgaff. £28.47 x 24 + £25 up front + £10 first month goodybag =£718.28
You can cancel the goodybag as soon as you receive the phone and pay off the phone at £28.47 month over 24 months.
All giffgaff phones come unlocked and you can use whatever sim you want in it.
I personally use 3 pay as you go at 3p min 2p text and 1p mb which is extremely cheap. I text alot and mainly use home Wifi which works out at roughly £4 per month. 3 coverage is great in London and ideal for me.
Obviously other peoples usage is different

    Kind Regards

  • Interesting to note the cheaper EE deals are *not* available in the apple store – I tried to buy an iphone 6 today in an apple store and their equivalent contract was about £100 higher. EE had the cheaper deals in store, but had less stock.

  • EE have the worst connectivity where my mum lives. She only has 2 bars. My iPhone that is on Vodafone 4 bars. I have a iPhone 4, and my mum has a iPhone 5S.

  • Ken,

I read an article today at the Standard in London that EE is not working so well as the marketing launch was, and on top of that, it is more expensive. Not sure if a monthly fee is worthwhile than pay as you go, if one have broadband at home already.

  • Just for reference, the cheapest deal offering a free iPhone 4S has now dropped to just £41 per month on a 24 month contract on Vodafone with the CPW group of websites which include e2save, onestopphoneshop and mobiles.co.uk.

This is obviously for the 16Gb edition but is available for both the black and the white colour schemes, can be found here.

However, for value for money it is worth holding out for Tesco Mobile to launch their iPhone 4S deals as they will be offering a 12 month contract that beats all competition for total expenditure over the contract period although you will obviously be paying an upfront cost for the phone.

  • I’m currently on O2 but am thinking of switching to Orange as I think they have better 3g coverage in my area. My only worry is with the ‘Fair Usage’ limit on internet use. Is 750MB a lot or am I going to find myself paying extra? I often watch youtube clips and stuff on my phone and receive a lot of emails.

  • Hi guys,

Updated the prices to the post-VAT cut prices (at 17.5%) on both this page and the price comparison tool.

It’s worth nothing that Orange and Tesco haven’t increased the price of their PAYG iPhone. They might be absorbing the VAT increase… which would mean they now beat O2 price-wise. Alternatively, they haven’t yet updated their price and you’ll be charged more at the checkout. Double-check before buying!

  • Theres an update on the way for the VAT cuts. At the moment, Orange is still advertising pre-VAT cut prices so I have left O2 prices at their pre-VAT cut levels for ease of comparison. See the article log for details of page updates.

  • any news on a 3 uk iphone release date (if any)? im on the network and am very happy with it and its services, although am prepared to leave 3uk for an alternative network if 3uk dont provide the iphone 3gs. it is annoying it has not yet reached 3uk, seeing as it is on the 3 network in other countries, such as ireland and austrailia.

    • Hi Gareth,

Afraid not. Three have said they would like to stock an iPhone in 2010 but nothings been set in stone yet. We don’t know whether 3 are even in negotiations with Apple yet.

  • Dear all,

You can now use our comparison tool to automatically compare prices amongst 23 iPhone tariffs:
    http://cow.neondragon.net/iphone/

The tool will calculate the total cost of ownership of the iPhone for each of the tariffs listed here and help you decide which one presents the best value for money.

  • Ken on the Tesco £20 a month tariff after 12 months the unlimited download and internet ends and you have to start paying for the down loads, do you see this as a big disadvantage.

I am trying to transform the prices to my country, well i must say it is much cheaper abroad. European Comission is trying to force the prices th the right track, this far 50% success.

  • I think you’ve missed one of the O2 contracts – having looked at their website, it looks as though they do have a £30 18-month contract, just not a 24-month one.
