Tap on <em>Cellular Data Options<\/em> and enable the <em>Data Roaming<\/em> feature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Android:<\/strong> Open the <em>Settings<\/em> application and go to <em>Network &amp; internet &gt; Mobile network<\/em>. Enable the <em>Data roaming<\/em> option. You&#8217;ll often be able to find free wi-fi internet at hotels, pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, train stations and airports.<\/p>\n<p>When using a public wi-fi network, it&#8217;s important to keep an eye on the security of your data. Information that&#8217;s transmitted over a public wi-fi network can potentially be intercepted and read by other people. You can minimise the risk of using public wi-fi networks by sticking to <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/fundamentals\/security\/encrypt-in-transit\/why-https\">encrypted websites<\/a> with <em>https:\/\/<\/em> at the start of the web address. You can also use a trusted VPN service (e.g. one that&#8217;s been provided by your employer or school or one you&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.co.uk\/gadgets\/2017\/05\/how-to-build-your-own-vpn\/\">set up yourself<\/a>). Some people recommend using a commercial VPN service but we&#8217;d probably recommend against this for <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2016\/06\/aiming-for-anonymity-ars-assesses-the-state-of-vpns-in-2016\/\">a number of reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Saving_on_Phone_Calls_With_VoIP\">Saving on Phone Calls With VoIP<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21314\" src=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Skype-App-158x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Skype-App-158x300.jpg 158w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Skype-App-21x40.jpg 21w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Skype-App-53x100.jpg 53w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Skype-App.jpg 496w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/>Depending on where you&#8217;re travelling to, it can sometimes be very expensive to make a phone call whilst roaming (typically around \u00a31.50\/minute if you&#8217;re travelling outside of Europe).<\/p>\n<p>Instead of paying the extortionate fees for a phone call whilst roaming, you can side-step this by making a call over wi-fi instead. There are numerous applications that will allow you to do this but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/\">WhatsApp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skype.com\/en\/new\/\">Skype<\/a> are probably two of the best known. If you&#8217;re calling someone through the application that also uses WhatsApp or Skype, there will be no additional fees charged for the phone call.<\/p>\n<p>For the times where you need to a call a standard phone number, Skype provides a service where you can call out to a regular phone number. You&#8217;ll need to top-up your Skype account to pay for the call, but the rates will normally be a lot cheaper than making a phone call through your mobile network.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Instant_Messaging_Apps\">Instant Messaging Apps<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21069\" style=\"max-width: 183px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21069\" src=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/iMessage-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/iMessage-275x300.jpg 275w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/iMessage-37x40.jpg 37w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/iMessage-92x100.jpg 92w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/iMessage.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 183px) 100vw, 183px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s sometimes cheaper to send an instant message rather than sending a SMS text message.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instant messaging applications like iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Snapchat will use your mobile internet connection instead of SMS\/text message. Because of this, you&#8217;ll require a data connection in order to send or receive messages through the app.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you&#8217;re abroad and connected to a wi-fi network<\/strong>, you can use an instant messaging app to send and receive messages for free. This allows to bypass the charge for sending a text message when abroad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you&#8217;re abroad and have mobile internet switched on<\/strong>, it will normally be far cheaper to send an instant message rather than a SMS text message. The amount of data used by an instant message is normally minimal as long as you aren&#8217;t sharing photos or videos.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you&#8217;re abroad and have mobile internet switched off<\/strong>, you won&#8217;t be able to send or receive instant messages through an app (you&#8217;ll need to wait until you connect to wi-fi to pick up and send messages). You&#8217;ll still be able to send and receive regular SMS text messages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re switching on the mobile internet feature solely for the use of instant messaging apps, it&#8217;s worth noting that other applications may try to access the internet at the same time. Because of this, it may sometimes work out to be more expensive than expected to switch on the mobile data feature to send a message.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Download_Maps_To_Use_Offline\">Download Maps To Use Offline<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21311\" src=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Google-Maps-App-167x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Google-Maps-App-167x300.jpg 167w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Google-Maps-App-22x40.jpg 22w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Google-Maps-App-56x100.jpg 56w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Google-Maps-App.jpg 329w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 139px) 100vw, 139px\" \/>Often, you&#8217;ll want to use your mobile phone for directions and navigation whilst travelling abroad. This will typically require you to have an active data connection (either wi-fi if you&#8217;re in range of a hotspot or mobile internet if you&#8217;re not).<\/p>\n<p>To minimise the amount of data you require, it&#8217;s possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/maps\/answer\/6291838?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&amp;hl=en\">download maps<\/a> so they&#8217;re available locally on your device. This will allow you to see a map even if you don&#8217;t have an active internet connection. With offline maps, you won&#8217;t be able to search for locations and certain pieces of information (e.g. business addresses and opening times) may not be available.<\/p>\n<p>You can download the maps for an area to be available offline by opening the Google Maps application and searching for the place you&#8217;re visiting (e.g. &#8220;Paris&#8221; or &#8220;New York&#8221;). At the bottom of the screen, tap on the name of the place you&#8217;re visiting followed by the &#8216;Download&#8217; option. We recommend doing this whilst connected to wi-fi (ideally even before you depart from home).<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Adapters_Locks_Electronic_Devices\">Adapters, Locks &amp; Electronic Devices<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14951\" style=\"max-width: 167px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14951\" src=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Samsung-Portable-Battery-Pack-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Samsung-Portable-Battery-Pack-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Samsung-Portable-Battery-Pack-26x40.jpg 26w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Samsung-Portable-Battery-Pack-66x100.jpg 66w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Samsung-Portable-Battery-Pack.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It can be worthwhile investing in a portable battery pack to make sure your electronic devices will always have enough charge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to pack the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/s\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?url=search-alias=aps&amp;field-keywords=travel+adapter&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=cosbl08-21&amp;linkId=a60050f45c9b721258b3b97850c758ed\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-aff=\"Amazon.co.uk\" data-ourl=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/s\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?url=search-alias=aps&amp;field-keywords=travel+adapter&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=cosbl08-21&amp;linkId=a60050f45c9b721258b3b97850c758ed\">relevant power adapter<\/a> so you can charge your electronic devices whilst abroad (including your mobile phone, laptop, hair dryer, shaver and more).<\/p>\n<p>For your luggage, you should make sure this is secured with the right type of lock. If you&#8217;re travelling to the United States, we&#8217;d strongly recommend buying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/s\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?url=search-alias=aps&amp;field-keywords=tsa+approved+lock&amp;rh=i:aps,k:tsa+approved+lock&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=cosbl08-21&amp;linkId=8832ef97848fef071fd8be649e85694d\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-aff=\"Amazon.co.uk\" data-ourl=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/s\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?url=search-alias=aps&amp;field-keywords=tsa+approved+lock&amp;rh=i:aps,k:tsa+approved+lock&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=cosbl08-21&amp;linkId=8832ef97848fef071fd8be649e85694d\">TSA-approved luggage lock<\/a>. If your lock is not TSA-approved, it may be broken with a bolt cutter by the security team at US airports.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you should make sure your electronic devices <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-28223150\">have a sufficient amount of charge<\/a> before boarding your flight. Occasionally, you may be asked to demonstrate the functionality of your devices at the airport (including any smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras and e-book readers in your hand luggage).
