The telephone number prefix dictates the cost of your call, and whether it&#8217;s included within your plan.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>[form]<\/p>\n<p>As a rule of thumb, you can use your inclusive minutes to call UK landline and mobile numbers (most phone numbers beginning with 01, 02, 03 and 07). Phone numbers beginning with 084, 087 and 09 are special-rate numbers and will cost you more to call. Phone numbers beginning with 0800 and 0808 will always be free to call.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we&#8217;ll discuss UK phone numbers and how much you can expect it to cost when calling from your UK mobile plan. The area code at the start of the phone number will tell you where the landline is based. Some common <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_dialling_codes_in_the_United_Kingdom\">UK area codes<\/a> include the following:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-unstyled\" style=\"-moz-column-count: 4; -moz-column-gap: 1.5rem; -webkit-column-count: 4; -webkit-column-gap: 1.5rem; column-count: 4; column-gap: 1.5rem;\">\n<li><strong>0113<\/strong> &#8211; Leeds<\/li>\n<li><strong>0114<\/strong> &#8211; Sheffield<\/li>\n<li><strong>0115<\/strong> &#8211; Nottingham<\/li>\n<li><strong>0116<\/strong> &#8211; Leicester<\/li>\n<li><strong>0117<\/strong> &#8211; Bristol<\/li>\n<li><strong>0118<\/strong> &#8211; Reading<\/li>\n<li><strong>0121<\/strong> &#8211; Birmingham<\/li>\n<li><strong>0131<\/strong> &#8211; Edinburgh<\/li>\n<li><strong>0141<\/strong> &#8211; Glasgow<\/li>\n<li><strong>0151<\/strong> &#8211; Liverpool<\/li>\n<li><strong>0161<\/strong> &#8211; Manchester<\/li>\n<li><strong>0191<\/strong> &#8211; Newcastle<\/li>\n<li><strong>01923<\/strong> &#8211; Watford<\/li>\n<li><strong>020<\/strong> &#8211; London<\/li>\n<li><strong>023<\/strong> &#8211; Southampton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can call any UK landline number at your network&#8217;s standard per-minute rate. For the most part, you&#8217;ll pay your standard per-minute rates when calling a 07 phone number. Instead, they&#8217;re classified as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/about-ofcom\/latest\/features-and-news\/consumers-warned-about-070-missed-call-scam\">personal numbers and pagers<\/a> (both of which cost you significantly more to call). You <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actionfraud.police.uk\/news\/alert-watch-out-for-premium-rate-personal-numbers-nov14\">shouldn&#8217;t return a missed call<\/a> from 070 or 076 phone numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption-text mt-0\"><em class=\"small\">* Once again, there are a number of exceptions to this rule. Besides the allocation of 070 and 076 to personal numbers and pagers, there are also allocated phone number ranges for the Isle of Man (07524, 07624, 07924), Jersey (07509, 07700, 07797, 07829, 07937) and Guernsey (07781, 07839, 07911). Phone calls to any of these numbers are classed as a non-UK call. You&#8217;ll therefore be charged <a href=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/index.php\/cheapest-international-calls\">international rates<\/a> and won&#8217;t be able to use your inclusive allowance of minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"UK_Freephone_Numbers_Starting_0800_0808\">UK Freephone <small class=\"text-muted\">(Numbers Starting <strong>0800 &amp; 0808<\/strong>)<\/small><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"phone-number-type-message-freephone\">All phone numbers beginning with <strong>0800 or 0808<\/strong> are UK freephone numbers. Since July 2015, it has always been free to call one of these numbers, either from a UK landline or a mobile. These phone calls will also not count towards your inclusive allowance of minutes.<\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"UK_Special_Rate_Numbers_Starting_084_087_09\">UK Special Rate <small class=\"text-muted\">(Numbers Starting <strong>084, 087 &amp; 09<\/strong>)<\/small><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17136\" src=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/UK-Calling-Logo-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/UK-Calling-Logo-300x264.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/UK-Calling-Logo-40x35.jpg 40w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/UK-Calling-Logo-100x88.jpg 100w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/UK-Calling-Logo.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-rate\">\n<p>A phone number beginning with <strong>084, 087 or 09<\/strong> is a special service or premium-rate number. The cost of calling a special rate number is split into two parts. You&#8217;ll pay an <a href=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/index.php\/special-rate-phone-numbers\">access charge<\/a> to your mobile network (typically up to 55p\/minute). In addition, you&#8217;ll also pay a service charge to the company running the phone number:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>084<\/strong> &#8211; Up to 7p\/minute<\/li>\n<li><strong>087<\/strong> &#8211; Up to 13p\/minute<\/li>\n<li><strong>09<\/strong> &#8211; Up to \u00a33.60\/minute, \u00a36\/call or a combination of the two things<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/psauthority.org.uk\/for-consumers\">Phone-Paid Services Authority (PSA)<\/a> is the UK\u2019s regulator for special rate phone numbers. You should contact the PSA if you have a dispute about the cost of calling a special rate number.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not possible to use your inclusive minutes to call a special rate phone number. If you&#8217;re a Pay Monthly customer, the additional charges will appear on your next bill. Meanwhile, if you&#8217;re a Pay As You Go customer, you&#8217;ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/index.php\/payg-top-ups\">top-up your account<\/a> with enough credit before making the call.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"International_Numbers_Starting_00\">International <small class=\"text-muted\">(Numbers Starting <strong>00<\/strong>)<\/small><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21332\" src=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Globe-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Globe-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Globe-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Globe-40x27.jpg 40w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Globe-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Globe.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>If you dial a phone number beginning with two zeros, you\u2019ll be making an <a href=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/index.php\/cheapest-international-calls\">international call<\/a> outside the UK. You\u2019ll normally dial two zeros followed by an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_country_calling_codes#Alphabetical_listing_by_country_or_region\">international country code<\/a> and then the local phone number within that country.<\/p>\n<p>On most mobile phones, the + sign (obtained by long pressing the zero button) can also substitute in place of dialling 00.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/index.php\/convert-uk-international-phone-number\">UK\u2019s international dialling code<\/a> is 44. Phone numbers beginning with 0044 or +44 are therefore actually based in the UK. You&#8217;ll pay the same rate whether you dial a phone number beginning with 0044, +44 or 0. In other words, it makes no difference whether you dial 0044 7123 456 789, +44 7123 456 789 or 07123 456 789 (they&#8217;re all the same thing).<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Other_Phone_Numbers\">Other Phone Numbers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are some other phone numbers not belonging in any of the above categories.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-999\">If you need to contact the emergency services (including police, ambulance, fire brigade and coastguard), you should dial <strong>999<\/strong>. This is an emergency number that can be dialled for free from any phone (it works even if your handset is locked or missing a SIM card).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other phone numbers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>101<\/strong> &#8211; <span class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-101\">This is the non-emergency police phone number. You should use it when there is no immediate response required (e.g. for general enquiries and to provide information relating to crimes in the past). It&#8217;s free to call this phone number.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>105<\/strong> &#8211; <span class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-105\">This is the phone number to call if you have a power cut in England, Scotland and Wales. It will connect you to the relevant electricity network operator in your area. It&#8217;s free to call this phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>111<\/strong> &#8211; <span class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-111\">This is the non-emergency NHS medical advice number. You should use it when there is no immediate response required. It&#8217;s free to call this phone number. 111 isn&#8217;t currently available in Northern Ireland.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>112<\/strong> &#8211; <span class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-112\">This is another way of contacting the emergency services (it&#8217;s equivalent to dialling 999). You should use it to contact the emergency services (including police, ambulance, fire brigade and coastguard). Calls to this phone number are free. 112 is a standardised phone number for the emergency services that can be called in any EU country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-116xxx\"><strong>116XXX<\/strong> &#8211; 116 phone numbers are <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/digital-single-market\/116-helplines\">pan-European helplines<\/a> for children and adults in need. It&#8217;s always free to call a phone number beginning with 116, wherever you are in the EU. The helplines currently in operation in the UK are:\n<ul>\n<li>116 100 &#8211; Hotline for missing children<\/li>\n<li>116 111 &#8211; Child helpline (NSPCC)<\/li>\n<li>116 123 &#8211; The Samaritans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-118xxx\"><strong>118XXX<\/strong> &#8211; These phone numbers are for directory enquiries. They&#8217;re normally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-39896315\">incredibly expensive<\/a> (e.g. often around \u00a39 for a one-minute call).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"phone-number-type-message-special-customer-service\">Individual mobile networks also have their own <a href=\"https:\/\/kenstechtips.com\/index.php\/contact-uk-mobile-networks\">shortcodes for contacting customer services<\/a> (e.g. 150 on EE, 202 or 4445 on O2, 333 on Three, 191 on Vodafone, etc).<\/p>\n<p>There are also a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/psauthority.org.uk\/for-consumers\/what-are-phone-paid-services\/sms-shortcodes\">premium-rate SMS shortcodes<\/a>, normally five or six digits in length. These are used for voting in TV shows (e.g. X Factor or Britain&#8217;s Got Talent), for entering competitions and for making donations to charity. The cost of sending a text message to one of these numbers should normally be advertised, or you can check it on the <a href=\"https:\/\/psauthority.org.uk\/about-us\/number-checker\">Phone-paid Services Authority website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Historical Phone Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>In the past, 0500 phone numbers were also in use by several companies. These have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/consultations-and-statements\/category-2\/re-consultation-0500-freephone\">withdrawn<\/a>, as of June 2017, and will no longer work. You should contact the organisation behind the phone number to ask them for the replacement number.<\/p>\n<p>In London, many outdated shop signs still refer to 0171 and 0181 phone numbers. These phone numbers prefixes have not been in use since April 2000, and should be replaced with the new versions (either 020 7, or 020 8).
