BT Mobile Family SIM: Up To 45% Off Additional SIM Only Deals

October 26th, 2016

BT Mobile has launched a Family SIM offer, giving you a discount when additional SIM cards are added to the same plan.

BT Mobile Family SIMIn the UK, BT Mobile is a 4G mobile network making use of coverage from EE. Their new Family SIM offer allows you to save up to 45% when multiple SIM cards are linked together onto one Family plan.

A key benefit of the Family SIM offering is that each SIM card has its own individual allowance (so it isn’t necessary to share an allowance). Family SIM cards can also be added and removed at any time with only a 30-day contract. There’s also the ability to customise things so each person in your family has varying amounts of control over their SIM card (e.g. over how much they’re able to spend).

In this article, we’ll review BT Mobile’s Family SIM offering. We’ll start by looking at the Family SIMs available and at how much money you’re able to save with a Family SIM. We’ll then look at how you can manage your Family SIM cards and at the coverage you can expect when using the service. Finally, we’ll discuss how you can keep an existing phone number when family members choose to join your BT Mobile Family SIM plan.

Pricing & Discounts

BTBT Mobile’s Family SIM offering is a unique way for your family to save money on their mobile phone bill.

Rather than everyone buying their own individual SIM card, it’s possible to instead to buy Family SIMs that are linked together onto one combined bill.

Everyone will have their own individual allowance as normal, but you’ll be able to save money through a discount on additional family SIM cards. Your additional SIM cards also have much more flexibility and come on a 30-day contract instead of a 12-month contract.

The Family SIM offer is currently available on a choice of two plans: BT Mobile’s 2GB and 15GB SIM-only plans.

2GB Family Plan

BT Mobile 2GBOn BT Mobile, the 2GB SIM-only plan typically costs £15/month (discounted to £10/month if you’re living in a BT Broadband household).

If you continue adding further SIM cards to your Family plan, the fourth one will cost £6/month and the fifth one will cost £5/month.

Please note: BT Mobile occasionally has a gift card promotion (you’ll receive a free gift card when ordering a BT Mobile SIM card). With the Family SIM discount, it’s worth being aware you’ll only receive the gift card once. Please note: BT occasionally has a gift card promotion (you’ll receive a free gift card when ordering a BT Mobile SIM card). With the Family SIM discount, you’ll only receive the gift card once with your main SIM card. For this reason, depending on the gift card, it may sometimes still work out better value to order individual SIM cards.

500MB Family Plan

BT Mobile 500MBUnfortunately, the Family SIM discount is not currently available on BT Mobile’s 500MB plan. Instead, you’ll need to order individual SIM cards for each person in your family (each SIM will cost £10/month in a non-BT Broadband household and £5/month in a household with BT Broadband).

Existing BT Mobile Customers

If you’re already a BT Mobile customer, you can add additional Family SIM cards through the BT Mobile website. Please note that a new 12-month minimum term will apply on your main contract when you switch to the Family SIM offering.

If your family already has multiple BT Mobile accounts, you can save money by combining them into a Family SIM group. To do so, the primary bill payer needs to log in to their BT Mobile account. They should then click on ‘Manage your SIMs’ to invite people to join the Family SIM group.

Controlling Spend

Phone CallOn BT Mobile’s Family SIM offer, there is one combined bill for all of your family’s mobile usage. The billpayer is the person who signs up for Family SIM and is the person who is responsible for charges incurred.

To help control your family’s spending and to minimise the chance of you receiving an unexpected bill, BT automatically applies a monthly spend cap to each of your Family SIMs. You can adjust this online to any amount between £5 and £200 (subject to credit status).

By default, the billpayer also reserves certain control over each of the Family SIM cards. For instance, only the billpayer will be able to buy add-ons, change parental controls, adjust spend caps or request a PAC code. This can optionally be changed on a per-SIM card basis to delegate control at one of two levels:

  • “Some controls” (Suitable for all ages). This is the default option. Only the billpayer will be able to buy add-ons, change parental controls or adjust spend caps. Individual users will still be able to monitor their own usage. If applicable, they’ll also be able to access BT Wi-Fi and BT Sport.
  • “Full controls” (Suitable only for users over 18). This allows the individual user to buy add-ons, to adjust parental controls and to set their own spend cap.

The Family SIM billpayer is able to adjust the controls setting at any time by logging in to their BT Mobile account and by selecting the “Personalise your SIM” section.

Coverage

2G, 3G & 4G Coverage from EE

BT Mobile Coverage Map 2016

BT Mobile offers 99% population coverage using the EE network.

BT uses EE as their network coverage provider so customers on BT Mobile will receive exactly the same coverage as customers on EE (in fact, EE and BT have actually been the same company since February 2016).

At the time of writing, BT Mobile has 99% population coverage for calling and texting. This includes 98% population coverage on 3G and 97% population coverage on 4G.

Before ordering a Family SIM card from BT Mobile, we strongly recommend checking the coverage in your area. You can do this by entering your postcode on BT Mobile’s online coverage map:

Extra Speed 4G

By default, BT Mobile Family SIM cards have access to EE’s standard-speed 4G network (this gives typical download speeds of around 12-15Mbps).

If you’d like access to EE’s double-speed 4G network (with typical download speeds of around 24-30Mbps), you’ll need to buy BT’s Extra Speed add-on. This is £4/month for each SIM card on which you’d like to add Extra Speed 4G.

Tethering

Personal HotspotTethering or personal hotspot refers to the process of sharing your smartphone’s internet connection with other devices (e.g. with your laptop or tablet). It’s a convenient way of getting your other devices connected to the internet when you’re out-and-about.

Tethering and portable hotspot are supported on all BT Mobile Family SIM cards.

For more information about tethering on different UK networks, please see our guide to tethering in the UK.

Keeping Your Phone Number

It’s a straightforward process for everyone in your family to transfer their existing phone numbers over to BT Mobile.

BT Mobile Brand ImageOnce you’ve ordered your Family SIM cards from BT Mobile, you should ask everyone in your family to request a PAC Code from their old mobile network. This is a nine-digit code that authorises the transfer of the phone number to BT Mobile and must legally be provided by the old network within two hours of your request.

Once the new Family SIM cards have arrived and been activated, you can provide the PAC Codes to BT via this online form. Alternatively, you can contact BT Customer Care on 150 to do this over the phone. The phone number will normally be transferred on the next working day after you provide the PAC Code to BT.

It is only a year since IKEA shut down their Family mobile. Why couldn’t BT come up with an original name?
