The UK’s Cheapest iPhone 6s: EE, Giffgaff, O2, Tesco, Three & Vodafone Compared

October 31st, 2015

We compare the total cost of buying an iPhone 6s on EE, giffgaff, O2, Tesco Mobile, Three and Vodafone.

iPhone 6s ColoursApple’s iPhone 6s is currently the UK’s bestselling smartphone. Building upon last year’s highly popular iPhone 6, the iPhone 6s adds a new interaction mode known as 3D Touch. Many of the phone’s internals have also been upgraded: there’s now a 12 megapixel iSight camera and an Apple A9 processor which is 70% faster. The design has also seen an upgrade: the handset is now constructed from Series 7000 aluminium.

In the UK, the iPhone 6s is available to buy on EE, giffgaff, O2, Tesco Mobile, Three and Vodafone. Between them, the six networks offer the handset on a choice of more than 80 different tariffs. In this article, we’ll compare the cost of the iPhone 6s on each of the six networks here in the UK. We’ll also review the features available on each network.

Cheapest Deals: At A Glance

EE vs O2 vs Three vs VodafoneIn the UK, the iPhone 6s is currently offered on EE, giffgaff, O2, Tesco Mobile, Three and Vodafone. Between them, the six networks have the iPhone 6s available on a choice of more than 80 different tariffs.

When choosing a price plan for your iPhone 6s, you’ll need to decide how much data you want. In general, most people will typically require about 2GB per month. For light users, however, 1GB per month can sometimes suffice. For heavy users, we recommend choosing a price plan with at least 4GB per month.

In the following tables, we show the cheapest available deal on each mobile network for different amounts of data.

With 1GB of Data

If you’re a fairly light user who mainly uses wi-fi (e.g. when at home or in the office), it’ll sometimes be possible to choose a plan with 1GB of monthly data. In the following table, we show the UK’s cheapest deals for an iPhone 6s with at least 1GB of data per month:

Cheapest Deals: By Mobile Network

EE

EEIn general, EE is the most expensive network for the iPhone 6s.

They justify their higher-than-average prices by claiming to have the “biggest and fastest” network in the UK. For about 75% of the population, there’s double-speed 4G coverage when buying a 4GEE Extra plan. For customers in London, even higher speeds are available on EE’s 4G+ network (LTE-Advanced with download speeds of up to 90Mbit/s). EE also has a Wi-Fi Calling service for better coverage indoors and for calling on the Underground. For more information, see our in-depth review of the coverage on EE.

giffgaff

Giffgaff LogoAt present, giffgaff is by far the best value network for buying an iPhone 6s.

Like on O2 and Tesco Mobile, your monthly bill is split up into two separate parts. There’ll be a monthly payment towards the cost of your handset and a separate monthly payment for the cost of your airtime. To give an example, you might choose to pay £200 upfront for your handset. You’ll then pay £25.52/month (this is made up of £15.52 for the handset and £10 for the giffgaff goodybag).

On giffgaff, you’ll be provided with a fully-unlocked iPhone 6s (this will work on any mobile network without you needing to unlock it). Another benefit is there’s only a one-month commitment on the giffgaff goodybags: you can easily change to a different tariff if your circumstances require.

In general, it’s best to pay as much as you can upfront (this will lead to a lower total cost over the 24 months).

With giffgaff, you’ll be asked to make a pre-payment for the first month’s goodybag. Hence, if you were to choose a £10 per month goodybag, an extra £10 will be added to the upfront cost (e.g. you might pay £200 upfront for your handset and then another £10 for the first month’s goodybag). You can change your goodybag at any time, but the total cost of ownership assumes you stay on the same tariff for the whole 24 months.

giffgaff uses O2 as a network coverage provider (customers on giffgaff and O2 will get the exact same coverage).

O2

O2O2 generally appears in the middle of the pack when it comes to value for money on the iPhone 6s.

A benefit of joining O2 is their O2 Refresh price plan: it allows you to upgrade your handset at any time. With O2 Refresh, your monthly payment is split into two separate parts. For instance, the £37.50 monthly payment breaks down as £20 for the handset and £17.50 for the airtime. You can upgrade your handset at any time by paying off the remainder of your Device Plan (this works in a very similar way to on giffgaff and Tesco Mobile).

Another key benefit of joining O2 is the O2 Priority app. This has a number of exclusives such as a £1 lunch available every Monday and exclusive access to entertainment tickets before general release.

Tesco Mobile

Tesco MobileTesco is generally the second-cheapest network for buying an iPhone 6s.

Like on giffgaff and O2, Tesco splits your monthly payment is split into two separate parts (e.g. the £42 tariff is split into £25 for the handset and £17 for the airtime). The handset is provided with no upfront cost on an Anytime Upgrade basis (you can change your phone at any time by paying off the phone portion of your plan).

Three

ThreeAlongside giffgaff and Tesco Mobile, Three also tends to have some good value deals for buying an iPhone 6s.

A key benefit of joining the Three network is their Feel At Home offer. With this, you can use your smartphone abroad at no extra charge in 18 other countries (includes Spain, the USA, Italy, France, Australia and the Republic of Ireland). Other benefits include 4G Super Voice and your iPhone 6s being provided unlocked for use on any network.

Vodafone

Vodafone

Vodafone tends to be a fairly expensive network for buying the iPhone 6s.

All customers joining Vodafone receive the Data Test Drive free of charge (unlimited data for the first 3 months). Customers choosing a Red Value tariff will also get 4G Entertainment included in their plan (a free subscription to either Netflix, Now TV, Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile TV). The 4G Entertainment is worth up to £9.99/month, making Vodafone a more competitive offering if you were to use these services anyway.

    Hi all,
Just a quick note to say we’ve updated the page for the iPhone 6s. Comments below still refer to an older version of the iPhone.

Interesting to note the cheaper EE deals are *not* available in the apple store – I tried to buy an iphone 6 today in an apple store and their equivalent contract was about £100 higher. EE had the cheaper deals in store, but had less stock.

EE have the worst connectivity where my mum lives. She only has 2 bars. My iPhone that is on Vodafone 4 bars. I have a iPhone 4, and my mum has a iPhone 5S.

We’ve rewritten & updated the article with tariffs for the iPhone 6. The comments below may still refer to an older version of the iPhone.

    Ken,

I read an article today at the Standard in London that EE is not working so well as the marketing launch was, and on top of that, it is more expensive. Not sure if a monthly fee is worthwhile than pay as you go, if one have broadband at home already.

Just for reference, the cheapest deal offering a free iPhone 4S has now dropped to just £41 per month on a 24 month contract on Vodafone with the CPW group of websites which include e2save, onestopphoneshop and mobiles.co.uk.

This is obviously for the 16Gb edition but is available for both the black and the white colour schemes, can be found here.

However, for value for money it is worth holding out for Tesco Mobile to launch their iPhone 4S deals as they will be offering a 12 month contract that beats all competition for total expenditure over the contract period although you will obviously be paying an upfront cost for the phone.

Could you do business tariffs as well? Would be handy to try and encourage the boss!

Ken – Three have announced their tariffs. Could you also add Total Cost of Ownership to the Table?

    1. Ken Lo
      Ken replied:

      Hi there,

Well noticed! Yep update coming soon… as well as info about the Total Cost of Ownership. For the time being, the calculator over at http://cow.neondragon.net/iphone/ has this information.

      Ken

    2. Ken Lo
      Ken replied:

Ok, Three's tariffs are now up! The comparison site will show you Total Cost of Ownership for each tariff, considering any excess call/text costs.

I’m currently on O2 but am thinking of switching to Orange as I think they have better 3g coverage in my area. My only worry is with the ‘Fair Usage’ limit on internet use. Is 750MB a lot or am I going to find myself paying extra? I often watch youtube clips and stuff on my phone and receive a lot of emails.

    Ken said:

    Hi guys,

Updated the prices to the post-VAT cut prices (at 17.5%) on both this page and the price comparison tool.

It’s worth nothing that Orange and Tesco haven’t increased the price of their PAYG iPhone. They might be absorbing the VAT increase… which would mean they now beat O2 price-wise. Alternatively, they haven’t yet updated their price and you’ll be charged more at the checkout. Double-check before buying!

    Ken

  18. Ken Lo
    Ken said:

Theres an update on the way for the VAT cuts. At the moment, Orange is still advertising pre-VAT cut prices so I have left O2 prices at their pre-VAT cut levels for ease of comparison. See the article log for details of page updates.

any news on a 3 uk iphone release date (if any)? im on the network and am very happy with it and its services, although am prepared to leave 3uk for an alternative network if 3uk dont provide the iphone 3gs. it is annoying it has not yet reached 3uk, seeing as it is on the 3 network in other countries, such as ireland and austrailia.

      Ken replied:

      Hi Gareth,

Afraid not. Three have said they would like to stock an iPhone in 2010 but nothings been set in stone yet. We don’t know whether 3 are even in negotiations with Apple yet.

    Dear all,

You can now use our comparison tool to automatically compare prices amongst 23 iPhone tariffs:
    http://cow.neondragon.net/iphone/

The tool will calculate the total cost of ownership of the iPhone for each of the tariffs listed here and help you decide which one presents the best value for money.

when I look at O2, Orange and Vodafone pricing it remind me the definition of the word Cartel more.

    cartel [(kahr-tel)]

An association in which producers of a similar or identical product try to obtain a monopoly over the sale of the product.

Ken on the Tesco £20 a month tariff after 12 months the unlimited download and internet ends and you have to start paying for the down loads, do you see this as a big disadvantage.

  23. Paintball Kolbudy said:

I am trying to transform the prices to my country, well i must say it is much cheaper abroad. European Comission is trying to force the prices th the right track, this far 50% success.

    Ken said:

Thanks David; I’ve amended the article. Also added info. about Orange’s fair usage policy.

  25. David said:

I think you’ve missed one of the O2 contracts – having looked at their website, it looks as though they do have a £30 18-month contract, just not a 24-month one.
